Buhari vows to investigate Sanusi’s allegation of missing $20 Billion

President-elect, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), on Sunday said his administration would take a second look at the claim by a former Governor of the Central Bank, now Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, that $20bn, that was supposed to be remitted by the NNPC to the federation account, could not be unaccounted.

Buhari said this while receiving a delegation of party supporters and newly elected officials on the platform of the All Progressives Congress from Adamawa State at his campaign office in Abuja.

The President-Elect, who spoke in the local Hausa language, expressed surprise that instead of probing the allegations by the former CBN governor, the authorities chose to fire him.

According to him, since Sanusi’s claim was documented, his administration will take a second look at the document when he assumes power on May 29th.

Buhari said, “On the issue of corruption, I heard that some people have started returning money. I will not believe it until I go and see for myself.

“You all know what the Emir of Kano talked about when he was the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. He said $20 billion dollars, not naira, $20 billion dollars, was unaccounted for; they said it was a lie. Instead of investigating it, they sacked him. And God in his infinite mercy made him the Emir of Kano. In any case, that is what he wanted. And since this was documented, the new administration will take a look at it.”

This is against the background of a pronouncement by the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has started refunding the unremitted $1.48bn into the federation account.

While expressing gratitude to the visiting delegation, Buhari in response to several requests, said his administration would work in tandem with the manifesto of the APC.

He listed priority areas to include security of lives and property, the economy, job creation and the war against corruption.

  3. Nonsense . Buhari should concentrate on usefull matters rather than chasing shadows. The fool that bmade the accusation could not prove it. A forensic audit was conducted. Of course most Nigerians want to believe that such a huge amount was stolen.
If the we work with facts and figures . The Richest man in Continent Africa is worth about 3 Billion dollars. Such an amount cannot be hidden. If somebody had embezzled 20 Billion he should be locked up in a mad house. How can NNPC officials have that amount and still wake up and be in the Office by 7 AM daily to answer somebody SIr. Think Nigerians. It was APC ploy to keep the GEJ government discomfieted and give the impression of squandermania. The Election is Over. Buhari should face his promises or he will get bogged down chasing shadows. That may be a good thing because if he is chasing shadows he will not deliver and we Shall Kick him to Daura.

    3. He must be either a direct beneficiary of the outgoing corrupt government or from Otuoke.

  4. This is the direction that a serious administration should go given the colossal sum involved. Of course, the objective is to recover the amount from wherever and or in whoever's accounts its sitting for Nigerians' benefit rather than few bourgeoisie. The outgoing President clandestinely waived the allegation aside by trivializing it on the premise that Nigeria's budget is not up to that amount. However, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo educated the Government in his mind bogging article that the missing fund does not happen at once but over some time. The revelation is enough for a non corrupt Government to swing into action to unravel the mystery surrounding the flight of such amount of money. My take on this is that the in-coming Government should do a thorough investigation devoid of witch hunting. We keep our fingers crossed.

  6. Buhari should also take a look at Sanusi's blatant corruption at the CBN. The looting of the treasury by Sanusi, N1b paid to "security firms", over N4b "donated" to Bayeso University, Kano, N5b paid to Nasir EL-Rufai and several billions in flight tickets, etc. For Buhari not to be seen as a Fulani president probing only non-Fulani Nigerians, he should also look into these allegations as well. As a matter of fact, these were the allegations being probed by the government that made Sanusi to raise his own counter allegations of $49b, $10.9b and later $20b. Buhari should prove the critics wrong this time around and be act impartially since these allegations are also documented.

  7. This is reassuring. We can't simply wish away such huge sums because some people are bent on hiding the truth. Sanusi cannot have been wrong; he was CBN governor, for God's sake!

  13. Na wah for Nigeria. Am surprised so many people took the former CBN serious. Some one that started with $ 100 billion, then he changed to $40 billion then to $20 billion. The allegation did not come with any basis ie how many barrels of crude was sold , for how much per barrel for each day and how much was received into the national coffers. That is why am not surprised when the PWC report came out and said noting of such except for the $1.2 billion unremitted by NNPC.
