Governor Lamido Says South-West Will Not Vote For Buhai

The governor of Jigawa State has predicted that the South-west geopolitical zone would not vote for the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), because that would place the APC national leader, Senator Bola Tinubu, as the leader of the Yoruba race.

“If the Yorubas vote for Buhari because their son is the national leader of the South-west, then it will prove that (Asiwaju) Bola Tinubu is the undisputed leader of the Yorubas. This is because his people have spoken and therefore hearkened to Tinubu’s directives,” he said.

Lamido, who is the North-west Coordinator of the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organization, PDPPCO, further noted that religion and ethnicity would play a major role in the March 28 presidential election, owing to the fact that President Goodluck Jonathan is from the south and a Christian while Buhari is a Muslim northerner.

He went on to challenge the presidential candidate of the APC to state how he intends to confront corruption, which is the major plank of his presidential manifesto, when some former governors of the PDP who are now members of the APC are facing corruption charges in the courts.

His words, “How would Buhari, if he became president, tackle the corruption cases pending against the former Governor of Gombe, Danjuma Goje, and the former Governor of Kwara State, Bukola Saraki. What will he do to them? Will he send them to jail or convict them as he did when he was the military head of state.

“Buhari should come clean and tell Nigerians his blueprint on how to tackle corruption. It is not just shouting about corruption. Let Nigerians know how this would be done,” he said.

The Governor further noted that religious sentiments and campaigns on the basis of ethnicity have boosted Buhari’s standing in the north, stressing that: “People of the north are said to be supporting him because they say that he is one of our own and he is Muslim.

“This is also what is happening in the south. Some of President Jonathan’s supporters in the south are doing so because he is a Christian and from the south. But above all, to the elite, we see him from the prism of what he has done. That is why I said that he is the preferred candidate.”

Lamido, who was speaking exclusively to ThisDay said, “Some elite in the north have made religion the campaign issue. They are supporting Buhari, not because they love him, but simply because he is Muslim from the north and are against President Jonathan because he is from the south and is a Christian. This is the mode of the presidential campaigns in the north.

“But Thank God we are breaking and debunking this myth because the Nigeria of today has gone past that stage. The works of the PDP governors in bringing home the dividends of democracy is gradually presenting President Jonathan as the preferred presidential candidate.

“Even among the elite and northern establishment, Jonathan is seen as the preferred candidate despite the campaign style of the APC in using religion and ethnicity to entice the talakawas (local parlance for the masses),” he added.

  3. The west will vote overwhelmingly for Buhari because it is the most sophisticated zone politically. They base their support on record of performance. After trying Jonathan for four years without anything to show for it, they will definitely vote against him this time around. Of all the states in the zone, Lagos is the only one that has been voting the same government because of good governance. The rest has changed their governors on at least two occasions. As far as the zone is concerned Jonathan can forget their votes because the Yorubas can not be easily deceived.

  7. The comment by the Governor is highly biased along ethnicity and religion. The South-West is the brain-box of Nigerian politics and comprises individuals that are enlightened and self-opinionated. I believe the Governor was revealing the information they pass on to Jonathan and PDP that give them FALSE hope of a potential success in the South-West. Let Governor Lamido know that this election is not about APC or General Buhari but a national desire by over 71% impoverished Nigerians for CHANGE from incompetence, unrivalled corruption, lawlessness and collapsing economy.

  8. Lamido is shameless.he wants to use religion and ethnicity to divide us again its too late change is here based on credibility nt cluelessness. He is in pdp to cover corruption cases against him and his son arrested

  9. Patience said it is only when someone fails a class that he repeats. But, people are allowed to come back and try again after a while to retry. Assuming the General failed 30 years ago, that long enough to have understood why he failed.
GEJ has failed, and he still failing. He needs some time back in Otuoke, he can come back in 30 years to try again.
If the General still commands such popularity after 30 years, the he's got something to offer!

  10. Clearly, the south western states are voting for Buhari, this is what corruption does to people's thinking capacity. With the overwhelming evidence on ground someone is still talking this way. Shame!

  15. Isnt it obvious that Lamido is playing gsme.He is standing on d fence obviously. If Buhari wins as it is obvious he has enough friends that can beg APC to take him in. But if he supports Buhari publicly and Jona wins he knows his son is going to jail. It is onlya mmadman that would say south west are going to vote GEJ. Just yesterday 2 guys in my office joined d no of people I know who regret their 2011 vote for GEJ and are vociferously campaigning for Buhari. In my company now of about 700 staff a guy was complaigning why almost all other staff are treating him as an enemy of Nigerian. That is how bad it has gone for PDP and GEJ
