Nigerian Elections postponed - AP

There is no official confirmation or announcement yet, but  according to the Associated Press(AP).

Nigeria's electoral commission will postpone Feb. 14 presidential and legislative elections for six weeks to give a new multinational force time to secure northeastern areas under the sway of Boko Haram, an official close to the commission told The Associated Press on Saturday.

Millions could be disenfranchised if the voting went ahead while the Islamic extremists hold a large swath of the northeast and commit mayhem that has driven 1.5 million people from their homes.

A major offensive with warplanes and ground troops from Chad and Nigeria already has forced the insurgents from a dozen towns and villages in the past 10 days. Even greater military strikes by more countries are planned.

The official who is knowledgeable of the discussions said the Independent National Electoral Commission will announce the postponement at a news conference later Saturday. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.
Officials in President Goodluck Jonathan's administration had been calling for a postponement, which is opposed by an opposition coalition fielding his chief rival, former military dictator Muhammadu Buhari.

Supporters of both sides are threatening violence if their candidate does not win. Some 800 people were killed in riots in the mainly Muslim north after Buhari, a Muslim, lost 2011 elections to Jonathan, a Christian from the south.

A postponement also will give electoral officials more time to deliver some 30 million voter cards. The commission had said the non-delivery of cards to nearly half of the 68.8 million registered voters was not a good reason to delay the vote.

Now if only thirteen persons vote in the whole nation a winner will still emerge, we don't need every body to vote before a winner will emerge

  17. OK.
So its taking 6 years and 6 months before its obvious that the north east is vital for the elections which GEJ told the world will hold on 14th and 28th Feb.2015. I really think its a shame. Sometimes , i cant explain the mentality of those in govt and those advising. them on issues.GEJ should just admit he has been dancing to the drums beats of failure. He should just throw in the towel

  26. It is disappointing going through all these shames because someone wants to retain power.

What was the FG doing all these period? Stealing the remaining money to bribe those participating in organizing the election as it was in Ekiti

    ReplyDelete
  27. If that will help to resolve the crisis is better they postpone it

    ReplyDelete
  28. Why the proposed Postponement? INEC b4 has said they were ready/prepared for the election.
People, i sense a Big Conspiracy...........

    ReplyDelete
  29. Well i applaud this decision. More time 4 apc to strategise, more time for pdp to fight bokharam, more time for running preparation, more time to collect pvc.above all more time for fresh air

    ReplyDelete
  30. This BS. Absolute nonsense! What kind of people does GEJ think he is ruling! Fools? How on earth wud he think we would buy this smelly story?! How?! 6yrs!!! Kidnapped girls.. numerous bombings and he is going to try and manage and curb that in 6weeks. What a joke! To say he is clueless and an embarrassment to nigeria is putting it mildly. Nigeria needs help and only God can save us from this terrible horrible leaders we have. Smh

    ReplyDelete
  31. When they saw that the PVC excuse didn't work.. they switched to Boko haram. Again to say they are clueless is an understatement and to think we'll by this BS is more worrisome.

    ReplyDelete
  32. How long will it take for INEC to know how to get the voters cards together and distribute, without giving flimsy excuses that show how illiterate they really are? How long has the "terrorism" issue been ongoing with no action from govt? Why do they care now? Is there another pot of money about to be shared by the few? Postponement is a weak excuse for continued rape of everyones birth right (oil and minerals). Why does it usual for anyone who works in govt and speaks the truth to be removed and threatened and harassed with EFCC? Is there a true democracy in Nigeria? Why has nothing happened to govt officials who have been exposed as misappropriating funds? If a CHANGE is not due, prepare for doom!!!!!

  33. We are ready for this election, we need change . Pls we dnt wnt u anymore GEJ, we re tired, umenployment, corruption, etc. Abeg just go. Shame on u!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Postponing Elections will cost NIGERIA more money in a country that is largely ravaged by hunger, austerity, unemployment which are all products of the high level mismanagement. GEJ is bent on coming back but God will never let that happen. We the youths must be ready to fight, protect and protest any manipulation. 100m GEJ and 100m Okonjo can't stop this change. We need a new hand whether Buhari or not, just anyone right now is better than GEJ even the cripple on the street will manage NIGERIA better. GEJ must go back to fishing inside Otueke creeks.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The statement that supportes of both PDP and APC threaten violence if their side does not win is NOT correct. Only PDP supporters have threatened violence because they have too much at stake. If Buhari wins, many PDP looters will go to jail, so they are scared stiff and would do anything to scuttle the elections. But they have driven Nigerians to the edge. There is nothing they can do now other than to flee to those countries where they are hiding their loot.

A new survey conducted by the Centre for Law Enforcement Education (CLEEN Foundation) and the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) has shown that about 89 percent of eligible voters are willing to vote in the 2015 general election slated for this February.

The survey titled “Findings of the Election Viability Poll and the 9th Security Threat Assessment: Towards 2015 Elections” also revealed that Ekiti State with 97 percent top the list among states that would actively participate in the election, followed by Katsina, Bauchi and Niger states respectively.
In the report made public yesterday in Abuja by the Programme Manager of the foundation Nengak Gondyi, the foundation volunteered to partner security operatives to enhance voters’ safety and equally recommended adequate public enlightenment to encourage adults’ participation in the poll.
Executive Director of the foundation Kemi Okenyodo ‎said security measures should be enhanced around the polling units and collation centres. “CLEEN foundation could run awareness campaigns to sensitize the public on advantages of a violence-free election,” she said
