PICTURE OF THE DAY: The 1999 Letter Dora Akunyili wrote Buhari when she returned $12000 PTF Money

Back in 1998, Dora Akunyili was the South-east Zonal Secretary of the Petroleum Trust Fund [PTF], when she had to travel to the United States for health reasons. Since her death in June 2014, it has emerged that she went to the US back then to get a cancer treatment surgery.

A letter has just been released which Akunyili wrote in 1999 thanking Gen. Buhari who was then the PTF Chairman, and who had approved £17,100 for her medical treatment. In the letter, she also returns some part of the money which she did not use, and Buhari was jubilant about her honesty and personal integrity.

In the letter from late Dora to Gen Buhari, she explains that she was returning £12,000 of the £17,100 because doctors decided surgery was not needed.

In a short memo on the letter, GMB wrote:

"See above report from PTF Zonal Secretary Zone 1. You see that there are still Nigerians with personal integrity. Please take action in line with PTF financial regulations."

The current Presidential candidate for the APC party signed his memo on 10th of February, same day the letter was written.

See the full letter below, titled APPENDIX 1: Commendation letter from Ex-Head of State, General Mohammadu Buhari. It appears on page 320 in a book about Dora Akunyili's time in NAFDAC titled - The War against Counterfeit Medicine.

  2. Of the truth there are sincere people who can man the affair of this great country with utmost integrity if given the opportunity. With this kind of example from GMB antecedent I am very sure that he would not leave any stone unturn in making sure that he gives corruption it's place in it's own grave which is what Nigeria wants at this trying period of our time. Let's cast our vote wisely to attract change in this country now because we may not have this opportunity of change this close again.

  3. It's not just about integrity and financial prudence. What about equality? While Alex Ekweme and other southern politicians were in kirikiri maximum prison, the like of shehu shagari were in house arrest apartment. How can a contesting president tell Nigerians that he borrowed to buy his presidential nomination form? How will he pay back if he fails to win the primaries or even the election? Is he saying he is still going to use the govt. Money he claims is being misused to pay back? And if he loses how is he going to pay back the money? Nigerians as we are don't like asking critical questions. The PDP n APC cannot be trusted because there is no trust in them... God save Nigeria

    1. It's fools like you that are raising irrelevant questions? Buhari is worth much more than 50million naira. Paying back loans should not and will never be a problem to a man of his standing.

    1. Your comments show how shallow minded you are. So you dont understand when that say someone has more than 50 million it means both cash, property and the persons standing? Your shallow mind also doesn't understand you need collateral for a loan abi?
Tell the truth, you simply cant stomach the fact that your GEJ cant tie any corruption with Buhari. Its so painful you GEJ supporters follow all Buhari stories around trying to discredit him, but your Bad Market GEJ keeps embarrassing you by the day making your work all the more difficult.
GEJ will lose woefully come feb 14 even the whole world does not expect anything less.
