'He was the head boy of our school in 1961' - Gen. Buhari's classmates come out to defend him

Following the recent controversy surrounding Gen Buhari's WASC certificate, some of the former classmates of the APC presidential candidate yesterday came out to defend him.

During his media briefing yesterday, Gen. Buhari mentioned two prominent Nigerians he went to school with, former president of the Court of Appeal, Justice Umaru Abdullahi and former inspector-general of police, Alhaji Ibrahim Coomassie.

The two men have spoken to the media confirming that they indeed went to school together.

In an exclusive interview with Leadership Newspapers, Alhaji Coomasie said they & about 5 prominent Nigerians attended the same school.

Coomasie said Buhari was the head boy and loved to play football during their days in school.

He mentioned the former PCA Justice Abdullahi; Gen Shehu Musa Yar’Adua; the late Grand Khadi Halilu, and a Second Republic senator Abdul Ali as some of their classmates.

Coomassie said:
“While we were in school, Buhari was the head boy. He loves playing football. We were all close friends in school. After we finished secondary school, General Buhari decided to join the military, I joined the police and Justice Abdullahi decided to go to the university.”

“I, the late Shehu Yar’Adua, the late Halilu, a Grand Khadi in Katsina, Senator Abdul Ali, a Senator in the 2nd Republic and several other attended the same school”

On his part, Justice Abdullahi described Buhari as a brilliant student when they were in school, saying he was Buhari’s classmate from primary to secondary school, saying:

“I, Buhari and some others had the best results during our final examinations in secondary school back then. He was a very brilliant student in school, no doubt; we attended the same school from primary to secondary school.”

  5. Dubious facts about the released results of General Buhari.

    1. The result bears the acronym of WAEC yet its well known that WAEC wasn't in existence as at 1961. CAMBRIDGE was the standard at that time.

    2. The result released by Buhari's WAEC bears KATSINA STATE as state/location of exam yet there wasn't a KATSINA STATE as at 1961 till 1987.

    3. MUHAMMADU BUHARI claims the Late Gen. Shehu Musa Yar'Adua was his classmate. Shehu who joined the Army in 1959 couldn't have been in secondary school as at 1961.

    4. Class 6 was introduced into our academic curriculum in 1990. How come MUHAMMADU BUHARI had passed that class before the government introduced it?

    5. It is on record that he passed Hausa Language. As at 1961, Hausa was not existing on the curriculum. That is quite a shocker.

    2. I am surprised, people don't use their common sense because they are politically biased. What the school released is the statement of results as copied from Cambridge result manuscript. So, the present format had to be used by the present Principal of the school. This is not a certificate. Hence, the format is carrying WASCE/NECO, common sence. Surprised to read also that FFK is saying that GMB is not qualified to be a commissioned officer bcos he entered without WEAC and only on the then principal recommendation . Block head. Even now, you can enter universities in Nigeria as well as abroad with mock test of the school and school recommendation and after taking WASCE, you continue if pass the exams. Is FFK not aware of this. FFK!!!!, trying to deceive people for your selfish end. Be patriotic and think more of Nigeria. There is GOD oooo!!!

    3. The one dat suprises me most is how he had A1 in Igbo and den C5 or so in his own hausa. Den i also need to ask- where d three major languages all compulsory subjects for waec in 1960s? I wasnt born den but I wonder y one individual will write 4 languages in one sitting....just asking. #TeamNoPoliticalParty# #NoSupport# #YoungGeneration# #ILoveNigeria#

  10. The result is worth much more than the PhD our president is parading. Not to talk of the military training. To become a general in the army you have to undergo serious training and attend various courses. The more you talk about this the better for the general.

    1. Elizabeth as educated as you are do you expect a state that no longer exists to issue a result as at today, do you expect the exams laws of credit in maths or English as criteria to enter the army in 1961 to still exist as at 2015, do you expect your statement of result to be used today to carry an outdated passport or do you use same old picture whenever you change your international passport, do you expect a statement of result issued by a ministry to have a WASSCE letter heading. I don't think we should put tribalism or sentiments into this coming election but we should think far beyond the line before jumping into conclusion and directing other people's mind sets.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS RE BUHARI's "CERTYIFICATE". ~ Bucky 2015.

    Common Questions

    1) Why are the dates on the certificate stamped 2015 and not 1961?

Answer: "The stamp and date served as authentication that the document was truly retrieved from the records of that Secondary School and it emanated from there. And, it MUST bear the date it was forwarded! And, Cambridge University also sent a computer print-out of the same certificate! So, the certificate itself bears 1961 while the stamp of the retrieving and forwarding establishment bears the date the retrieved document was forwarded (ie today's date). I am a professional Administrator." ~ Olasunkanmi Sukky Adeleke

    2) There was no Primary 6 in Nigeria in the 1960's. Why did Buhari leave secondary school at 18/19?

Answer: Please see this write-up on Nigeria's educational history from pre- colonisation to date. In the 1950's and at least the early 1960's, Nigerian children spent 6 years in primary school, and 7 years in secondary school.

"In the 1950s, Nigeria adopted the British system called Form Six that divided grades into six elementary years, three junior secondary years, two senior secondary years, and a two-year university preparation program. Those who scored high on exit examinations at the end of Form Six usually were qualified to enter universities."

    4) Buhari has a credit in Hausa language. Surely Hausa language was not taught in schools in 1961?

The educational system in Northern and Southern Nigeria in the Colonial Era was very different. Hausa was the official language of the Colonial administration in Northern Nigeria. Hausa was taught in colonial schools all through the colonial era.

"Hausa in the Twentieth Century: an overview" by John Edward Philips is particularly instructive. Page 25 talks about Hausa being the official language of the Colonial government in Northern Nigeria.

  15. It's really evident that the new generation of Nigerians only go to school, but they are still NOT learned.
You are really expecting to see a tattered and worn ot 50years old certificate??? even a Mr "professional printer!" The result was re-written!, so it cannot but look the way it is!!! You have the classmates come up and confirm his claims and yet you are still typeing thrash! My goodness! Look for another point to hammer on.....there is no case here ! and if you think there is, then please go back to primary school!

  18. You guys are insulting our intelligence, the fact that his fellow students attested that he was their costudent & even their headboy does not substitute itself to become the certificate required as prerequisite to contest as Nigerian President.
And as far as I'm concerned,as long as he waited for so much fuss to be made about it before providing whatever he has provided, you should stop referring him as Mr. Right. He is still prone to whatever errors committed by other governments or even more.

  19. Anonymous 22nd 2:55 you understand the tactics, how can somebody that did not pass maths get enroled into secondary school, buhari is corrupt hence he can provide a corrupted certificate, so how then can he fight corruption. Abeg buhari go and die.
