Questions General Buhari must answer, by Fani-Kayode

Major General Muhammadu Buhari has emerged as the APC flagbearer for the 2015 presidential election and President Goodluck Jonathan for the PDP. Now the battle for the soul and future of our nation begins. The forces of light shall surely prevail over the forces of darkness and God’s counsel alone shall stand over Nigeria. I stand with Jonathan and I say ‘’lets dance’’, ‘’lets get it on’’ and ‘’may the best man win’’.

Yet whilst doing so we ought to consider the words of Miss Dora Ade Bentley. On December 11 on her Facebook wall, she wrote the following: ‘’Jihadi groups killed more than 5,000 people last month, with Iraq topping the league table of deaths, followed by Nigeria, Afghanistan and Syria. In 664 incidents recorded in November by the BBC World Service and researched jointly with King’s College London, the overall death toll was 5,042, or an average of 168 deaths per day and nearly twice the number of people who were killed in the 11 September 2001 attacks on America. After Iraq, Nigeria, Afghanistan and Syria, Yemen was fifth in the deadly league table, tying with Somalia, with 37 incidents each’’.

All these and some people still say they don’t know who they want as President? An individual once said, only last year, that ‘’an attack on Boko Haram is an attack on the North’’; in 2001, that he wanted to ‘’spread Sharia throughout the federation’’; that “Muslims should only vote for Muslims’’; that ‘’why should Christians be concerned when Muslims cut off their limbs under Sharia”; and that ‘’after all the limbs that are being cut off are Muslim ones and not Christians; so why should the Christians other about it?’’

Since some are partial to Buhari, let us subject him to a little scrutiny right here and now. Let us put a few questions to him. Let us judge him by what he says and does.

On July 22, 2014, he told The Nation Newspaper: “Our country has gone through several rough patches, but never before have I seen a Nigerian President declare war on his own country as we are seeing now. Never before have I seen a Nigerian President deploy federal institutions in the service of partisanship as we are witnessing now. Never before have I seen a Nigerian President utilize the common wealth to subvert the system and punish the opposition, all in the name of politics. Our nation has suffered serious consequences in the past for egregious acts that are not even close to what we are seeing now. It is time to pull the brakes’’.

One may have been prepared to accept the general’s words as being those of a genuinely concerned and committed patriot who simply wanted our President and his government to do a better job and who was worried about the unfolding situation in our country if he had not consistently exposed his true colors and his obvious soft spot for Boko Haram.

Permit me to share just one example of the expression of that soft spot in this contribution. On June 3, 2013, Thisday Newspaper’s lead story carried the following headline: ‘’The military offensive against Boko Haram is anti-North – General Muhammadu Buhari’.

The story ran as follows: ‘’Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari has criticised the declaration of state of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States and the subsequent military offensive against the Boko Haram Islamic sect. Buhari, who featured on the “Guest of the Week,” a Hausa programme of the Kaduna-based Liberty Radio, yesterday, said the Federal Government’s action was a gross injustice against the North. According to him, unlike the special treatment the Federal Government gave to the Niger Delta militants, the Boko Haram members were being killed and their houses demolished. He said he was not in support of the declaration of state of emergency in the three north-eastern states because President Goodluck Jonathan had failed from the outset in addressing the security situation in the country’’.

The implications of these comments, coming from a former Head of State, are obvious and self-evident.

Yet that same General Buhari who said these unacceptable things one year ago is now busy pontificating about his concerns for our nation. Many would argue that, that is pretty rich coming from him given his past comments about a ruthless group of terrorists who, more than any other, merit the award for the greatest ‘’troublers of our nation’’. Given this, I regard Buhari’s comments to The Nation Newspaper on July 22, 2014 as nothing but self-serving.

Of particular interest to me were the following words: ‘’Never before have I seen a Nigerian President declare war on his own country as we are seeing now’’. Really? Correct me if I am wrong but I thought that the war that President Goodluck Jonathan has declared was against terrorism and Boko Haram and not against the Nigerian people.

Questions begging for answers
Does General Buhari find it difficult to make a distinction between the jihadists and the Nigerian people? Does he see them as being one and the same? Does he actually equate members of Jama’at ahl as-sunnah li-d-da’wa wa-l-jihad with the Nigerian people? Does he regard the military offensive against Boko Haram as being an offensive against OUR people? Does he honestly believe that anytime that a Boko Haram terrorist is killed by our armed forces and security agencies or that his house is blown up, it is an attack on the Nigerian people or an assault on the North? Are those people that Boko Haram slaughtering, terrorising, abducting, pillaging, robbing and raping on a daily basis all over our country not the real Nigerians?

Does he honestly believe that Boko Haram is representative of the thinking of our people or even the majority of the people in the Muslim North?

Is he still insisting on having another Muslim as his running mate in order to establish his strange dream of a Muslim/Muslim President and Vice President for our country or has he shelved that idea due to public resentment and outrage? Does he have any empathy with the Christian community in northern Nigeria for the immense suffering, degradation, humiliation, contempt, shame, indignity, persecution and mass murder that they have been subjected to in the North for the last 53 years and particularly in the last few years?

Does he still believe that ‘’Christians should not worry when Muslims chop off their own arms and hands in the name of Sharia because it is none of their business’’ as he said in 2001? Does he still believe that Boko Haram members should be forgiven, granted amnesty, pampered, sent abroad to learn and given monthly allowances like the Niger Delta militants like he suggested in 2013?
If the truth must be told, the only thing that is worse than Boko Haram are those in the Nigerian political class that secretly support and covertly assist them.

You're expired El-Rufai tells IBB, Buhari

Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has asked former military rulers, Generals Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) and Muhammadu Buhari, to quit the 2011 presidential race.
Speaking with Daily Sun in Abuja at the Leadership independence conference organized by the Leadership Newspaper on Nigeria at 50, El-Rufai canvassed the enthronement of a new generation of leaders. “I have great respect for President Babangida. I think he has done a lot for Nigeria. You won’t take that from him. He has made his mistakes like every human being, but people like President Babangida and General Buhari should just disappear. They should give way to a new set of people with new ideas. Young people preferably,” El-Rufai said.
El-Rufai said the whole world is now being ruled by young people and wondered why old blood should continue to rule Nigeria. “Obama is 48 and Cameron is 43 for God’s sake. So, why are we recycling leaders that ruled this country very well or very badly 25 years ago?,” he queried.
El-Rufai said: “I was 25 years old when Buhari and Babangida were Heads of State and I am now 50 and they still want to be Head of State. I don’t understand that. I don’t understand that at all and I call on the young people of Nigeria to take their future into their hands and ensure that in the next election, they vote for a new generation of leaders. “I think that we will not make progress until we break the link from the past and just move on. 70 per cent of Nigerians are below the age of 40. Many of these young people, the next generation, as they are called, are on internet services such as Facebook and twitter, using Blackberry and if you ask any of these people running for presidency, they will think that Blackberry is a fruit. So, we have to move away from there and stop thinking that this leadership thing is all about us or all about individuals. We must put the future of the country at heart and give way to a new generation of leadership.”While declaring that the nation had something to celebrate for remaining united as one country despite fighting a civil war, El-Rufai, however, said there was a lot to reflect about. “As we look towards the next 50 years, I think the principal issue in Nigeria has been the failure of leadership. We have not made the progress that our human and natural resources entitled us to make and it is all because we have failed leaders,” he noted. On the forthcoming elections, El-Rufai said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would ensure credible elections in 2011. “I have personal confidence in Prof. Attahiru Jega. He is a man of great integrity. He is an honest man, who could not be bought at any price and for that reason, we are all hopeful that he will ensure free and fair elections,” he said.

  4. "THE NIGERIAN NATION AGAINST GENERAL BUHARI from Soyinka in 2007"

Do we,Nigerians, suffer from mass amnesia? Why would those who claim to be literate and educated be moronic in assessing public figures for sensitive public offices, such as the Nigerian Presidency. In any society of civilized people, potential aspirants to such exalted public office are measured and assessed by their past performances in responsible public assignments/duties.Not in Nigeria!! For us in that clime, anything goes.No one wants to remember the past in assessing the future...and for that reason, history, especially the ugly ones, always repeat themselves frequently in Nigeria....ethnic and religious killings, massive abuse of office resulting in uncontrollable corruption and stealing of public funds by leaders, etc, etc (just to mention a few).Professor Wole Soyinka's expose' on Buhari is commendable. It once again reminds some of us who have slipped into the luxury of amnesia, for their selfish reasons, to come to terms with the realities on ground regarding a man who wants our democratic approval to RULE OVER us come May 29,2011.We need to wake up from that unfortunate slip. A dangerous snake is lurking in the homestead!!! Buhari is bad news for Nigeria. In the words of Prof Soyinka:"To invite back to power a man who did so much to destroy a people's self-esteem,dignity, and faith in law and justice,is a sign of self-abasement,lack of self-esteem,a slave mentality that dooms, not only the present, but succeeding generations"

As long as I do always remember your criticism of President Jonathan in those days you were romancing the APC, the stupid questions you now ask GMB makes no sense to me. I have an advice for you; shut up and steer clear commenting on political issues. You are one of Nigeria's problems.

“The army after toppling our democratic regime have no option but to install Buhari as head of state so as to avoid credibility problems, especially in the sight of the international community because of his being an epitome of integrity."
    - SHAGARI.
“There are only 2 honest & reliable Nigerians. Myself & Buhari. All what PDP is saying of Buhari being fundamentalist is mere hot lies. They just fear, let‘s go to jail “
    – OBJ
General Muhammadu Buhari as a member of the Supreme Military Council and as Head of NNPC was by nature taciturn and introvert. But he took any work that was given to him very seriously. He is reliable as he is hardworking and honest, his path of moral probity and rectitude” Incorruptible
    – President Olusegun Obasango , in his book, “Not My Will”.
“Buhari was a big brother & a father to some extent that mean nothing in life & to the nation always other than good. So, I fear no harm from him.“
    – LATE YAR‘ADUA.

Records are not kept simply to assist the weakness of the memory, but to operate as guides to the future…” – Wole Soyinka. “General Buhari has remained perpetually unelectable because his record as a military head of state and AFTERWARDS, is a warning that many Nigerians have wisely heeded. 18. There is nothing to fear with accepting Buhari as President. GEJ has failed Nigerians. GEJ was celebrating some of his uncompleted projects recently. GEJ said he will deal with the security challenges quickly but killing of innocent Nigerians continue.

It is now obvious that GEJ has no answer to the problems in Nigeria. He recently said that he should not be called Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. Why is he contesting for President again?

If GEJ wins the election in 2015, he will plunge the country into more suffering.

  20. Fani Kayode, you're speaking the truth. Only God can reward you. The truth is always bitter; but it's needed to be told. Buhari have sympathy for BH. It's very clear and if given the mandate, they'll actualised their plans. Nigerians should understand that Islam have an agenda to take this country to their so called ORGANISATION of ISLAMIC COUNTRIES but that should not be allowed to happen. Nigerians should not be allowed into bondage of darkness of Almajiri and street begging & hate rate for Education & wanton destruction. Islam is a Satanic Religion & the light of God must shine on this Nation. Why God luck Jonathan is not performing in some areas, is part of Islamic Agenda to frustrate Him & Nigerians to start looking for alternative but that Agenda has failed. Nigeria must match forward in Light.

  23. Buhari and Jonathan have tested power. Jonathan has academic qualifications and younger but age and degrees have nothing to do with leadership competence judging by their records so far. The president has demonstrated incompetency at the highest level as I can not see any significant improvement in the governance of this country in the last four years. To me Buhari is a better option, it doesn't matter his age. There is need for change lets keep sentiment apart. I am a Christian and Igboman but the only thing that will be of benefit to me in Nigeria is good governance. It doesn't matter which party, person or ethicity that provides such goddies to the people.

  28. I think this man is sick. Look at what he wrote as if it's true. Knowledge is power. I am beginning to feel cold towards this man FFK. It is true General Buhari said some of these statements, but if you are in the North you will realise that many innocent people have been killed as a result of fighting the insurgents. I ask and also need a response from you FFK, what has the state of emergency brought about? Has it solved the problem? In true sense, a wise person will / should know that the state of emergency should not have arisen in the first instance. But now we all know that Federal government is not sincere. Even the president himself said that there are saboteurs in his government. Yet he cannot sanction them. FFK's vote and his cohorts' cannot subvert people's will.

  29. The emergence of GEJ and BUHARI as presidential aspirant is dangerous to the unity of Nigeria. This is because for the first time in the history of Nigeria, Nigerians will be going to the polls to vote along religious lines. This is so unfortunate, I see it as a set up by unknown forces to set the country ablaze. May God deliver Nigeria from this wicked intention, and eliminate all the forces concerned be it foreign or local. Amen

  31. OBJ SPEAKS ON GMB:

“Gen. Muhammadu Buhari is an upright man. Not many people know that his first daughter is married to an Igbo man from Anambra. He exempted Christians from performing duty on Sundays.

When his Muslim soldiers asked him to exempt them from duty on Fridays he told them the bible says Christians should rest on the 7th day, the Muslims should show him where the Koran says they should rest on Fridays.”

As Head of State he slashed the number of Muslims going on pilgrimage by 50%. His driver and cook for the past 10 years plus are Christians yet some uninformed Nigerians say he is a bigot. It is a pity that some people failed to understand that PDP deliberately capitalised on the gullibility of Nigerians to paint him black.

This they did in order to keep their loot and ensure that he never gets the opportunity to send them to jail.

How many Nigerians would hold appointment in government as Minister of Petroleum, PTF Chairman and Head of State, yet don’t own a house in Abuja or all over Nigeria. He has only one house and never kept a foreign account.
Love him or hate him but you cannot take his integrity away from him.” – OBASANJO FACTS.
