Nigerian soldier sentenced to death for mutiny cries out on Facebook

A young 22-year-old Nigerian soldier, Fahat Fahat who was one of the 54 Nigerian soldiers sentenced to death by a court martial on charges of mutiny and refusing to go and fight the dreaded Boko Haram sect, has sent out a passionate message to Nigerians on Facebook, asking if they are justified to die even when the army did not provide the adequate equipment and training for them to fight the sect.

According to Fahat, pushing the young soldiers to fight the well equipped Boko Haram without the necessary weapons was like sending them to fight with their bare hands.

Shortly after they were sentenced to death for firing squad, Fahat took to his Facebook page to write the pathetic appeal to his countrymen.

"Hello ladies and gentle men. I am soldier and I am sentenced to death by the Nigerian Army. (be)Cause we did not go to fight Boko Haram without equipment. We ask for weapon instead (they) gave (us) death sentence."

However, another soldier, Fredrick Ayonronmi, who is Fahat’s friend but not one of the convicted soldiers, also took to Facebook to express happiness after an operation.

“Lord, thank you for my life, because I am a survivor of Boko Haram attack in Vimtim Forest. After five days in the bush, Lord I praise you,” his post read.

The details of the so called mutiny reads like a child's play because some of the accused soldiers testified that they refused to take part in the operation following the failure of the army to provide them with the necessary support equipment.

They explained that owing to a lack of equipment, they lost three officers, 23 soldiers plus 83 others suffering various degrees of injuries after their units were ambushed by Boko Haram fighters during an operation to retake the town of Bulabulin in Borno on July 9.

Some of the accused soldiers said they did not attend the briefing where the operation was announced, while others said they did not join the mission because they were ill and there was no medical personal attached to their unit to give medical assistance.

  1. I suppose this soldier to is sponsored by APC and DR. Davies. Yet some people out of sentiments insist we should vote in incompetence again. My dear SS and SE ppl please listen to the voice of reason let's not continue this cluelessness

    1. Party bigot, stop politicizing everything. The military has been robbed if adequate equipment since the military days to forestall coups. That is the error we are paying for today. APC's Buhari is part of this. Forget about your party. Someone's life is on the line and is asking for justice. The same officers who mismanaged defence funds is sentencing a inexperienced newly recruited soldier to death for refusing to commit suicide. Put your party in your pocket and contribute meaningfully

  2. The sentence will never be carried out, regardless of whether he is guilty or not. This is 2014 Nigeria and not 1990. A lot has changed.

  3. The soldier is a member of PDP. He is just wearing uniform.

  4. Is Mr. President awake or sleeping? He still wants Nigerians to vote for him with all atrocities surrounding his 6 years?

What action has been taken against those devils in the Defense Ministry? History will not forgive you if any of these men is killed. Boko Haram is killing both civilians and soldiers you are still going around looking for reelection.

Can you tell the nation which of your 2011 promises come true? As a leader, you surrond yourself with criminals who succeeded in turning you into a prisoner in the Aso Rock!

Wake up, pack your jagaja and return to your village.

  5. How does this concern PDP or AP?. Somebody is explaining to the world what happened to them and you are attributing it to APC. Nigerians should look into this because it has been a long time soldiers were complaining of lack of adequate weapons to fight Boko Haram.

  6. The nigerian army may lack the training not the equipment. Boko Haram is simply better motivated than the army and that makes a whole lot of difference. The corruption in the army reeks to the high heavens. Like the comment before me indicates, nobody is killing anybody - this is 2014.

  8. I want to urge all Nigerians to come out on the street to protest on behalf of the sentenced soldiers. These are young Nigerian who were supposed to be well equipped to fight the insurgents but here we're sending our young men into battle without commensurate machinery. It's not done anywhere in the civilised world. These young men should be granted pardon, given a change in orientation and re - equipped for a greater challenges if 2015 instead of cutting short their lives. Thank NE

  10. my take on this issue is simple. if junior soldiers who refuse to fight for lack of equipment are sentenced to death, what happens to the senior officers who fraudulently divert their equipment for personal gains? shouldn't they be shot on the spot?

  11. Oluchukwu ezeanya what concerns president in this issue I thought your a learned man ,look into the matter very and think of better thing to comment , but if u don't know what to say get out of here !

  12. Nigerian military never lacked weapons, what they lack is motivation because there are members of boko haram in the military who sabotages the efforts of the military this causes the soldiers to be de-motivated. If they are i'll equipped as stipulated by the opposition, where do the boko haram members get the weapons they use in fighting the state? i have watched several videos where the BH members attack military base and loot their armory, this will tell u that they are being sabotaged otherwise how would they have known that only few soldiers are guarding the armory and who gave order for just few soldiers (less than 5 soldiers) to guard a whole military armory?
If u are a soldier, what will u do? all these still boils down to the opposition, who have vowed to make GEJ's administration ungovernable.
GEJ has not done well, but Buhari is not an option otherwise must it be a northerner that would fly APC's presidential ticket? Is fashola not good enough to be president? Are there not other young Nigerians that are better than buhari?
Should Buhari win come 2015, don't we think that our economy will be 1000 times worse than now? don't we think that oil flow will be brought to a halt thereby causing economic hardship? don't we think that militancy level will rise to an unprecedented level? Do we think we can survive without oil?
I am comfortable the way we are now than an uncertain future.
If u think GEJ is not doing well, come forward with ur proposal on how to make Nigeria better rather than fight the government.

  13. This is just a mere noise making. The corrupt leadership of the nigeria army cannot execute any soldier. They are just running their mouth which is suffering from diaorrhia. Just to be forming buzy when they are not doing anything. Truth is that the country is finished.

  14. It baffles me when ever something like this occurred some people will be blaming Mr president. insulting him as if he is their mate. and to be honest with you most of them also insult their own parents. because if they could be able to respect their own parents. i don't think they will have the guts to insult mr president. ....

  15. Sentiments apart, i appeal to the Military authorities and Mr President to spear the lives of the 54 soldiers sentenced to death by firing sqad and rather concentrate on how to equip the Army with superior weaponry to combat the mance of insurgents crippling economic activities in the Northern part of the country.
