Ex-militant, Tompolo, buys seven warships

A former Niger Delta militant, Mr. Government Ekpemupolo, alia Tompolo, has bought seven decommissioned Norwegian battleships.

Reports by a Norwegian newspaper, Dagbladet, said that the fast-speed Hauk-class guided missile boats had been re-armed with new weaponry.

The report also revealed that Ekpemupolo’s most recent purchase is a KNM Horten, a fast-attack craft now used in fighting piracy in Nigeria’s waterways.

It was learnt that in spite of his alleged history of violence, Tompolo, now controls the Global West Vessel Service, a privately owned contractor for maritime security for the Nigerian Maritime Safety Agency.

Buying arms from Norway requires an export license from Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The ships were reportedly sold first to CAS Global, a British security company that has such a license, after which Ekpemupolo reportedly bought the ships from the British company.

Dagblade reported that the seven Norwegian ships are now part of the company’s maritime fleet patrolling under a contract for the Federal Government.

  1. A man with a history of violence should be kept away from arms at all cost. Now we cannot afford to see GEJ lose neither can we afford another Buhari loss. We are caught between a rock and a hard place.

  7. This is why we strongly believe GEJ is a weak, clueless individual who believes in appeasing terrorists and political thieves for his survival. Tompolo, a person known to be very violent should never be anywhere close to arms or government, but here is he going buying weapons with ease to do what!!? with it.

  10. What the heck is wrong with NE, your reportage is enmeshed with inconsistency. You made the story to look as if Tompolo bought the gun boat from Norway directly for sinister intentionsf, eventually you said from A British security company and finally you said the boat was meant to aid the activities of Tompolos security company which was contracted by FG to provide maritime security at the Niger Delta. Why???? Pls dont add more trouble to our fragile peace.

  11. One riff raff could successfully and legally as it seems secure the purchase of such weapons and Nigeria can't. What a government.

  12. This is exclusive preserve of the military and no private security company is allowed to be so armed. If the story is true, those warships should be recovered from him as soon as they arrive the Nigeria's shore. No warships except NN warships are allowed to sail on Nigeria's waters. It's therefore dangerous to allow an individual own such a fleet ofwarships. ab

  16. Dats a niz development, amodu's arms are cooling now in chad nd if l may ask, what's wrong with tompolo having those warships for effective results since he's a nigerian contractor in charge of sea activities afterall, fg seized a plane loaded with arms imported by a nigerian nd later released it to the owner, why is this one exception?. If l have my way, l will get mine since 2015 is fast around nd bokoharam is seriously disturbing. If ur not happy wit tompolo, go nd have undisturbed sleep.

  17. The Niger Deltans managed by default to get to rule after 54 years even though they feed the Federal Government and you don't want then to rule for only 2 terms? Do you think it will be export oil if they are unseated? You are rather naive.
