Nigerian Military orders arrest of General for running into bush with troops in fear of Boko Haram

The Army High Command has allegedly ordered the arrest and detention of a Brigadier-General attached to the 3rd Division of the Nigerian Army (names with-held) over allegations of negligence that gave Boko Haram terrorists an opportunity to overrun some communities in Borno State recently.

It was gathered that the senior officer who hails from one of the states in the South West, was the officer coordinating the military onslaught to dislodge several Boko Haram terrorists from Bama, Gwoza, Madagali, Michika and other communities in Borno and Adamawa states that later fell into the hands of the terrorists.

The General was accused of providing poor leadership and failed to instil confidence in the soldiers, resulting in several soldiers allegedly abandoning the fight against the terrorists while several of them lost their lives.

According to the source, when the Boko Haram insurgents came in full force to attack Bama, some top brass of the unit offered no resistance by running into the bush.

The source disclosed that the insurgents entered the Brigade Headquarters and Armoury freely and carted away vehicles and Tanks.

NE was told that some of the commanders were rescued from the bush by a battalion deployed at Konduga, which was stationed about 15 kilometers behind Bama, the last deployment before Maiduguri.

The Military high command was said to be furious that the insurgents after taking over Bama and killing hundreds of civilians ransacked the armoury with no soldier offering resistance, leaving the insurgents to have a free day.

According to the source; after seizing the equipment at the 21 Brigade Bama, the terrorists used the same weapons to attack the infantry battalion at Konduga but met their waterloo where hundreds of the Boko Haram insurgents were killed.

The source added that the 21 Armoured Brigade which had several armoured tanks could not withstand the battle that was later decided by less than 400 infantry soldiers in Konduga.

It was further gathered that after running away from Bama, some top brass of the brigade and about 800 troops went straight to Maiduguri instead of joining the troops in Konduga to repel the attack.
To face court-martial

It was also gathered that a board of inquiry is investigating the conduct of the officers for acts of negligence among other offences.

Military sources further revealed that Boko Haram terrorists were not really better armed in the terror war but rather leadership of troops on ground has been discovered as a problem that needed to be tackled.

Giving an instance, a source said: “Commanders of troops are supposed to lead soldiers from the frontline but what we discovered is that most of the commanders operate and give orders from the rear.

“If not that our soldiers are rugged and know that the Boko Haram terrorists could not match them professionally, what we are seeing today would have been the opposite. Actually, when terrorists see soldiers coming, they run for their lives, but due to poor leadership, the back-up arrangements are not activated. When soldiers therefore run out of ammunition and the terrorists regroup, soldiers will have no other choice than to retreat”.

The source cited the successes recorded severally in the battles to take over Konduga as the perfect way the Nigeria Army operates, noting that even though there were four different attacks with heavy weaponry, the army was able to defeat them and recovered stolen weapons.

  9. Now we see the cricket the army have been calling Goliath. if the junior officers has reacted they ( fellow shameless generals will call it mutiny ) we know that it's not easy but we dey here dey watch nd pray. It is better not to have an army than have the ones that empowers an enemy with weapons given to them to protect the citizens. Sorry masses.

    1. The corruption in this country has permeated even the so called noble profession. Most officers in Nigeria armed forces got their elevated position by maneuvers and godfatherism. Not by acts of courage. A significant number entered the military to build a career, not to serve the nation. By abandoning their barracks and running away they arm the enemy. The so called general is really stupid without imagination. If you have to abandon your post, why not at least destroy the munitions b4 running. A single grenade can set the whole thing off. Instead they left it for boko haram to plunder.

    2. Shut up your dirty mouth. Can you pass NDA exams not to talk of sustaining their training? You people take things on the periphery. Do you know the sound of gun or machine gun? Do you know where Sambisa forest is? Ewu awusa.

  10. A typical Yoruba man fears a lot, they are hardly able to making confrontations; in fact fearless ones are very rare. I advice, you use Igbos as commanders, they are naturally fearless and willing to make confrontations and very bold to holding the bull by the horn; it's in their genetic make. Check it out!

  11. unbehalf of the failed military attached to bama, I say sorry to the masses and the innocent displaced people of NE. we have allowed our weapon to get to boko haram freely without any resistance. shame to us bc we have failed in the discharge of our duty which we are paid for.

  12. See how most of you have narrowed your thoughts to tribal sentiments. How can this country surge forward if we don't overgrow this foolishness called tribalism. As far as I'm concerned, all types of people can be found in all tribes. I have some very wonderful friends and good people who are yorubas, just as I've met with some very bad ones too. I've also had to do things with some northerners, some are very good while some are also bad. I'm IBO and I have also interacted with some of my people who are good and some who are bad.
If we don't redress this psychological trend of approach to issues of national relevance, then we may as well be prepared to continue to be underdeveloped and remain estranged to the concept called CIVILISATION.

  14. never trust a yoruba.they are cowards but they make the loudest noise, they act like chameleon. Before a friend Gboyega left lagos for U.S.A we discussed and agree on certain things. now he doesnt respond to my mails. past and present experience has taught me that Yorubas cannot be trusted for anything. not even in the military, apart from Obasanjo and Benjamen Adekunle. even recently the north trusted Obasanjo but he too exhibited the natural attributes of Yorubas and he chose a terminally sick Yaradua to suucced him knowing fully wee that he will not last. SO NEVER NEVER TRUST YORUBA MAN

  15. I am NOT a Yoruba man and not even related to one, but I am quite disgusted with the negative stereotypes and labellings some people, especially from the S.E. do against Yorubas. It shows lack of love for other people. I also blame the journalist who pointed out the part of the country where the officer came from, because he/she couldn't have mentioned this without knowing the implication of doing so. The rate at which Igbos attack Yorubas is just getting to something else. Please let us love one another. Even if the Yoruba officer ran away from the war front, it has more to do with his own individual attitude and does not represent an entire ethnic nation. There is a fair chance that another Yoruba officer under the same pressure would have acted differently. I live in a barracks; I am aware of many Yoruba officers serving in the hotspots of the North East right now and who are doing well. Two captains who participated in repelling BH in the second and third battles at Konduga, are Yorubas, one from Ekiti and the other from Oyo. I know their names and faces anyday and they are still alive and kicking. And, last time I checked, the Yorubas have a very rich military history. The army of the Old Oyo Empire once struck terror into the hearts of many before the Europeans came. Of course, just like other armies, they did also have their own unlucky days but the point is that it is not possible for a people that are cowards or weak to do anything near the military or political feats of the Old Oyo empire in the first instance. Cowards don't set up empires. Whoever cares should consult historians for further details. Please let us stop hate messages. Every Nigerian ethnicity is good in its own way and is actually a part of what makes up our collective strength as a country. I am not a Yoruba apologist o. I am a Deltan o. If anybody abuses Hausa or Igbo or Idoma or my own Urhobo tribe, I will defend them the same way - because I love all peoples. God bless you all.

    1. All you said is true. But I also take exception to your claims that ibos especially attack the yorubas. These attacks go both ways. The tribalism in Nigeria is too ingrained. If they had pointed out that it was an Ibo officer, you will see yorubas here attacking the ibo race. My take is that we are all Nigerians and this is a failing of a Nigerian Military officer. AND not a yoruba military officer.

    2. @9:19PM, haba, the guy you replied to has pointed out that if it is Ibos or other tribes that are attacked, he would have defended them also, meaning that he himself knew that Yorubas too could attack Ibos. but in this case he made a good case for the Yoruba cos in this instance it's Yoruba that was attacked. He would have done same if it was the other way round. He sounds quite detribalised. We need more of such people.

  16. There are good and bad in any ethnic group in Naija like someone mentioned. The problem with Nigeria is leadership and love for ones country. People in Naija put their self interest ahead of what is good for the country. As someone that served in the US Army for 12 years I can honestly say that that General should be prosecuted for duty abandonment. Miltary service is a suicide mission for the love of your country period. I am a yoruba man and not scared to die for whatever is worth my life but will never think of serving Nigerian Army because of serious bad leadership on the polical side. Why would anyone put their lives up for govt that don't give a shit about their citizens? They steal unconscionable amount of money every day.

  17. Attacking the Igbos is the food of the Yorubas. I have been an avid reader of these attacks by Yorubas. Because they hate the Igbos any bad thing done by an Igbo man the Yorubas will generalize it. So, if only the Yorubas will stop it, then the Igbos will stop it as well.

  18. I've always said it, Nigeria embodies 3 different countries: Hausa, Ibo, Yoruba or maybe more. Until these subcountries go their separate ways and live on their own with their own cultures and practices, there can never be true peace and progress.
Imagine how Igbos, many of whom make their living in Lagos, a Yoruba land, are attacking Yorubas because of one Yoruba soldier. Many of these Igbos have been helped, supported in one way or another by Yorubas and now they are criticizing and painting all Yorubas with the same brush. Why don't u all go back to your Onitsha and Aba where there are saints who won't swindle you out of your money or betray u.
Nigeria is a ticking time bomb waiting to explode and it's only a matter of time before this reality dawns on everyone. Keep deceiving yourselves with 'unity and one Nigeria' when in your hearts you all want someone from your region to rule.
    Unity huh? Time will tell

  19. I just wonder where our country is going when people take tribalism as a way of living and make stupid comment to pressing issues facing the country. For your information do you realise that the South West people you rubbish without thinking played major role in sustaining our democracy of today. Also, note that people who are tribalistic tend to live in isolation and are always flustrated, quick to react without thing. God Bless Nigeria

  21. I totally agree 100%. Let each man carry his own cross. Let same people stay together and practice their own culture and traditions. Let's stop this pretence of equality and love which do not really exist. One Nigeria isnt working. Hausa go your way, Igbo go your way and Yoruba go your own way with your own people and form your own government.
    End of !!!!!
