Armed robber sentenced to death for stealing N9, 000

A Lagos High Court, Igbosere, on Wednesday sentenced an armed robber to death by hanging for disposing his victim of N9, 000.

The convict, ‎Onyekachi Abazu, reportedly robbed one Obioma Obiekwe of her N9, 000 and a BMW car marked CM659JJJ, at a gun point.

He committed the offence with others at large on June 13, 2007 at Gowon Estate, Ipaja‎.

Abazu was arraigned by the Lagos State Government on January 9, 2008, before Justice ‎Morenike Obadina on two- count charge of conspiracy and armed robbery under Sections 403 (A) and 402(2)(A) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos, 2003.

He had pleaded not guilty to the charges, prompting the court to go through the rigours of trial.
Delivering judgment on Wednesday, Justice Obadina said the prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

She found the defendant guilty as charged and thereby sentenced him to death by hanging as prescribed by the law under which he was charged.

  1. This judge is totally mad. Why is it in that in Nigeria one law is for the poor while another is for the rich. There are people stealing billions yet nobody prosecutes them. Someone stole 9000 has to be hanged. We know stolen is against the law and norms of the society. Would have been better to put him behind bar for some certain times to teach him some lessons instead. This judge is one of the hypocrites we have in Nigeria.

  2. Olakunle Sobowale, I support you, and your comment is a wise one too. Nigeria is a country run by set of mad people, not only people in government escape stealing, but such occurence of several offences within the government right from time immemorial has given birth to other bigger relevant crimes within the society to be alloted a smaller georgement, from the police, george, etc. While smaller offences are given heavy purnishment like the one described in above comment.

  5. That's the reason why people should get registered and vote in people who will change the laws. For now armed robbery attracts death penalty and there is nothing the judge could have done if the prosecutors had proved their case beyond any reasonable doubt. So the judge is not mad. Rather the citizens who collect money from politicians and vote dubious and selfish people into power and also fail to call them to account for their stewardship. So everyone go and register to vote and vote your conscience and demand accountability. However, armed robbery is a very grievous offence. If you've had an encounter with them, you'll know that they are not fit to live in a society where human beings live. Our corrupt politicians are also not any better. So both deserve death sentence by hanging or firing squad!!!

    1. I agree with you anonymous 9:50am about the stipulations of the law as regards the offense, but the question is,should this law be applicable to a group of Nigerians and inactive when it involves another group. The legal institutions and the press are one of our problems. We're always informed when a cheap criminal is caught or convicted, but cases involving a certain class are never judged and the press always fail to tell us anything about them. The judiciary is even more of our problem than the political class.

    2. The press and the judiciary are heavily compromised. There are few exceptions in the judiciary and press though. The "big men" (politicians) bribe the judiciary to pervert justice and bribe the press to kill the news. But if the politicians realises that the masses can vote them in and remove them if they go there to serve their selfish interest, the people will become the real masters. But as it stands now, the youths are the people who steal ballot boxes for them especially the criminal minded ones after collecting peanuts from thieves that pose as leaders. They rig elections for them and can even kill the opponents of their masters. Unfortunately, these politicians soon forget them when they get to position only to remember them again after four years. Sadly, these young people are always willing tools in the hands of the corrupt politicians. The day we realise that real power belongs to the people, the thugs that back them will join other people to tell our representatives the we also want death penalty for corrupt individuals too or his ticket will no longer be guaranteed. The people has the right to recall them, don't forget that. You are correct Chris, I believe that through enlightenment of especially our youths, we will overcome and Nigeria will be a better place. God bless Nigeria!

  6. Oscar was jailed for manslaughter (un-intentional killing) and not murder.
The guy collected a BMW car and N9000 from the victim at GUN POINT and the law stipulates that robbing with weapon is punishable by death. The amount does not matter. If he had collected one billion naira, it would still be thesame. However stealing or looting does n't attract death sentence in Nigeria for now. Therefore, i urge you all to refrain from armed robbery and think out something better to do with your life.

  7. Bokoharam Members who kill everyday when caught are given only prison terms to serve, hypocrisy and wickedness due to sentiments. Same as judgement against the 12 soldiers charged with mutiny. The Arm GOC who sold out the killed soldiers which was why the 12 soldiers revolted was not questioned for deliberately misleading the ambushed and killed soldiers. He was only retired and he was not even wounded nor touch let alone killed by the bullets, yet these 12 soldiers were handed down death sentence by firing squad. Where is Human Right?
