THE TRUTH IS OUT: Boko Haram sponsors are friends of President Jonathan - APC Chairman

Below is a text of a Press Conference addressed by the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

Good afternoon Gentlemen of the press, and thank you for honouring my invitation to this press conference.

Before I address you today, kindly permit me to replay the full interview of Dr. Stephen Davis, the Australian negotiator who was appointed by President Goodluck Jonathan to help secure the release of the over 200 girls who were abducted by Boko Haram on April 15th.

The interview was aired on Arise Television on Thursday Aug. 28th.

Video played. . .

Thank you for your patience, gentlemen.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) like many well-meaning Nigerians had resolved long ago that the issue of the Boko Haram insurgency should not be politicized. In view of this, the APC expressed its willingness and readiness to cooperate with the Federal Government in neutralizing the insurgency. Regrettably however, instead of accepting this offer of cooperation, the PDP-Federal Government has consistently pointed accusing fingers at our Party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the sponsor of Boko Haram. They have called us all sorts of derogatory names, but failed to provide any shred of evidence to support their claim.

It has been very clear to us that the vehemence and persistence of this accusation, the deliberate distortion of statements made by our leaders to paint us as Boko Haram sponsors and the way the PDP-led Federal Government has gone to hire foreign PR firms, at a huge cost to taxpayers, as well as foreign and local hack writers to push this narrative, they were struggling hard to cover up something. We waited patiently knowing that the truth will one day surface.

In a rare moment of truth, a top official of the Jonathan Administration, no less a personality than the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Gen. Andrew Owoye Azazi, situated the Boko Haram problem within the PDP. Shortly thereafter he was fired, and he later died in controversial circumstances. Still we waited.

They distorted and misrepresented the statements made by our leader, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, to try to convince the world that he was indeed the main sponsor of Boko Haram. They continued to echo the same slander about Gen. Buhari that was started by Presidential Spokesman Reuben Abati in 2011, and for which he and his cohorts eventually begged to settle out of court and to apologize to the General. Still we waited.

When their attempt to link Gen. Buhari with Boko Haram failed, as his popularity among ordinary Nigerians continued to soar, he was suddenly attacked by suicide bombers. Those who planned the attack believed this as the final solution to what they perceived as the threat he represents to the realization of their ambition. By the grace of God, he survived. We do not claim to know those who attacked him, but we do know those who provided the atmosphere for that attack to take place. Still we waited.

When the government declared a state of emergency in three worst-hit states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe in 2013, thousands of troops were deployed to the three states. But the unusual happened. The number of attacks simply skyrocketed. It is common knowledge that in any territory that has been placed under a state of emergency, the military takes charge of security, erecting checkpoints as part of efforts to keep a tab on security. Such was the situation in Borno in April 2014, when over 200 girls were abducted and driven away in many trucks.

Soldiers posted to a nearby checkpoint were said to have withdrawn shortly before the attack. Who ordered their withdrawal? Some of the trucks in which the girls were being carted away broke down, yet no one challenged them. Despite this bizarre occurrence, they refused to accept responsibility and continued to cast aspersion on our Party, the APC, as the sponsor of Boko Haram. Still we waited.
Boko Haram routinely enriched their arsenal with tanks, Armoured Personnel Carriers, guns, trucks and other military equipment which they seized from the Army. From the videos they release from time to time, one could see Boko Haram insurgents driving around unchallenged in convoys of up to 60 vehicles made-up of tanks and other military vehicles they seized from our military, in a territory that is under a state of emergency. What is happening? No one could fathom it. Still we waited.

A man known to all as the kingpin of Boko Haram, a man who helped to arm them so he could win elections and decimate his opponents, was moving around with the best security ever. He is a known ally of the President and he is not known to be under any immunity. Yet he was never arrested or even questioned. Still we waited.

In line with a Yoruba adage that says when a drum starts sounding too hard, it is about to burst, the PDP and the Presidency ratcheted up their attacks on our party, labelling us as Boko Haram sponsors. They hired a foreign firm, Levick, for US$1.2 million in taxpayers’ money, as well as a number of out-of-luck hack writers and pseudo analysts, one of them from Russia, to help push the narrative. Still we waited.

Then their drum exploded!

Dr. Stephen Davis, a man hired by the President Jonathan-led Federal Government to negotiate with Boko Haram for the release of the Chibok girls decided to speak out, believing the best way to tackle the insurgency is to expose the sponsors. And who are they? On international television last Thursday, and as you have just seen and heard, he named former Borno Governor Ali Modu Sheriff and a former Army Chief, Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, as the sponsors of Boko Haram.

Prodded by Sahara Reporters in a subsequent interview on whether Gen. Buhari and Malam Nasir el-Rufai were sponsors, he said the Boko Haram commanders who gave him the names of their sponsors did not mention their names. The die is cast. The truth is finally out! Boko Haram sponsors have been exposed. They are within the ruling PDP. They are friends of President Jonathan. He cannot pretend not to know who they are and what they have done and are still doing. His myriad of intelligence agencies, including the DSS and the DMI, cannot pretend they do not have any information on these men.

It is true that Ali Modu Sheriff was, until recently, a member of our Party. But the Party always suspected that he was a mole, planted to hijack or at best weaken the new Party for the PDP. He is not new to that role. He helped to decimate his former party, the ANPP, to an extent that the number of states under its control fell from seven in 2003 to three by the time he left as Governor.

We know for sure that Ali Modu Sheriff was planted in the APC to help decimate our party. We confronted him openly during the merger negotiation but he denied vigorously. His surrogate for the post of the Chairman of the APC, Chief Tom Ikimi together with whom they planned to hijack the Party for the Presidency was firmly rejected. Realizing they have failed, they fled our party and returned to where they came from, and were duly embraced by their controllers.

President Jonathan cannot pretend not to know the alleged role that Ali Modu Sheriff has played in the establishment and growth of Boko Haram, yet he never allowed the man to even be questioned by any of the security agencies under his control. All through his time with our Party, every time they accused us of sponsoring Boko Haram, on the basis of his presence, we challenged them if they had evidence to arrest any of our members who is suspected to be a sponsor, they never did. They dared not, because Sheriff was their agent. Even if he had remained in the APC after we democratically encouraged him to go, they would still not have arrested him.

Recall, gentlemen, that immediately Sheriff went back to the PDP, the Maiduguri Airport that had been closed to even the pilgrims from the state on grounds of security, was re-opened specially for him. What more evidence does anyone need that Sheriff was and remains President Jonathan’s Man Friday?
Our Stand

The truth is finally out. We have been vindicated. We have no hand in the Boko Haram insurgency. The raison d’etre of our party is the well-being and security of Nigerians

The sponsors of Boko Haram are within the PDP and the Presidency. They are known friends of President Jonathan. He knows them and they know him.

The man who exposed these Boko Haram sponsors is a Jonathan-appointed Negotiator. He has no axe to grind, neither does he have any motive to shield the APC or portray the PDP/Presidency in bad light. In fact, if he had any sympathy at all, it is for the man who hired him, President Jonathan.

We have said it all along. Boko Haram was politicized purely for one reason, and one reason only: To be used as a trump card for President Jonathan to win another term. For that strategy to work, the APC, which they see as the only stumbling block to the PDP’s victory in 2015, must be maligned and labeled. Gullible, duplicitous and self-serving politicians like Femi Fani-Kayode swallowed the bait, hook, line and sinker, and started parroting the glaring lies. PDP spokesman Olisa Metuh, an obvious pawn on the chess board, followed suit, labelling a party that comprises Nigerians of all ethnic and religious hue a Janjaweed and Islamic party. Now he is stewing in his own juice.

In the process of this dangerous politics, the Nigerian military which was globally acclaimed for its impressive showings at various peacekeeping missions around the world, simply suffered collateral damage. Apparently, fifth columnists in the military has sold the force out, first by denying it of the necessary fighting tools and then weakening it to such an extent that even the little it had was being taken away daily by insurgents. When the patriotic Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno tried to raise the issue of the poorly-equipped troops and their low morale, he was roundly pilloried. Now the world knows why!

Now that the cat has been let out of the bag and the real sponsors of Boko Haram have been exposed, we hope President Jonathan will summon the courage to do the right thing: Hand over the identified Boko Haram sponsors to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for investigation and prosecution.
There is no doubt that Boko Haram has committed crimes against humanity in its scorched-earth campaign against unharmed citizens, and the most appropriate body to investigate and try the sect’s sponsors is the ICC.

According to Article 17 of the Rome Statute that set up the ICC, and to which Nigeria is signatory, the ICC is a court of last resort, expected to exercise its jurisdiction only if states themselves are unwilling or unable genuinely to investigate and prosecute international crimes.

In view of the fact that the alleged Boko Haram sponsors are either members of the ruling party or friends of the President, it is clear that the PDP-led Federal Government is unwilling and unable to try them, hence our call.

Nigerians can rest assured that the APC will not allow this issue to be swept under the carpet.
Now that it is clear that the PDP is behind Boko Haram for the sole purpose of winning next year’s Presidential Election, Nigerians must prevail on the PDP and the Presidency to urgently end this insurgency and the daily killing and maiming of innocent Nigerians!

The President must remember that he is the Commander-in-Chief! The buck stops on his desk. He must now do all it takes to stop the growing mess in our nation’s North-East.
Nigerians expect no less!

The country had had many Chief of Army Staff just for this particular BH group, yet nothing has worked out. Now the question is what type of military tactis or style is the Nigeria Army employing to route out BH. I think that this question needs to be answered. Why would the FG play with our military. Obasanjo did what he did in Odi and Benue because our soldiers were killed. What is happening to this nation. Is it that our military is weak or what? BH is not a too strong terrorist group that is supposed to last for over one month. What is teally happening? GEJ please leave story telling and this your charade called TAN and fight this BH before it is too late.

Can't you see that it will be very foolish of Shakau to announce the name of his sponsors. It will also be counter-productive. Look, for APC to call a press conference on this shows that they are the ones manipulating nigerians and the master-mind behind BH operations

The way the world later fold their arms on the assistance they promise to render on chibok girls and the entire menace clearly indicate that the issue at hand is supported by govt at home. Let everybody knows that the north based on their population myth doesnt need to destroy themselves to this extent just to move presidency, something they can easily do democratically. The PDP- led govt has to end this killings immediately because it will not benefit them at the end of the day beyond 2015 even if they win the election. Truth must definitely prevail at the end. The north knew why they keep silence despite this wanton killings and destruction. Let PDP knows that to win election by any means is not the problem but to carry on the govt which is the people. They should not turn our beloved Nigeria to Syria pleassssss.

  24. Desperate, frustrated, imploding and sinking APC is looking for any piece of wood to survive after loosing so many top leaders, meaning all their tactics including using BK have failed. Now they know their using BK to frustrate Federal Govt and unseat GEJ is back-firing. Which has made Nigerians to begin to hate them and many are leaving them. While PDP is increasing in popularity and positioned to win the next election with land slide victory. How can some people with human brain call Ihejirika who had virtually flushed BK out of Nigeria if not for APC Leaders, their lawyers and the so called Northern elders who started propaganda that Ihejirika was killing their brothers and sons (meaning boko haram members). They equally went further to threaten him of suing him to War Crime court. We can all recall when Ihejirika foiled the first Boko Haram grouping to bomb Abuja in an uncompleted building in Abuja, it was this APC and their lawyers who started calling for the head of Ihejirika for stopping those BK.
Infact the truth that is out is that if Ihejirika had remain as Army Chief if not retirement due to his fulfilling/completing maximum service years in Army. With that adopted tactics of his Boko Haram would have long been forgotten. Because APC and their cohorts are using BK against the Fed Govt and GEJ, they were not happy Ihejirirka was about uprooting BK. I believe the so called Steven is an APC Hire, to tell fabricated lies and prank us into believing APC has nothing to do with BK but PDP, thereby sway Nigerians to their side. I believe majority of Nigerians are not donkeys, cows, or camels or fools which they use to manipulate. Nigerians are wiser and we know the truth, Oyegun we are blind nor deaf to what are happening. Days of using propaganda and sentiments as instruments, be it religions or tribal are gone. Any Nigerian who loves peace and unity will have nothing to do with group of sadists, Hegelian and violence people, who only feel they can get anything even if it means killing all Nigerian. They told us at the beginning that what Nigeria is experiencing would happen if GEJ wins election or continues to rule during 2011 election. Their pasts are hunting them. Nigerians, these guys are trying to take advantage of shallow memories of some of us. This time around many Nigerians have upgraded and are no longer having short memories, we still remember past events. So, BK and APC and their Oyegun, Lying Mohamed, El'Rufai, Northern Elders and others should go to hell and leave Nigeria alone.

BH is issue is a national threat to us and we need to take drastic approach to resolve it.
As CiC of a nation and the President of this nation, GEJ needs to take drastic action, am tired of all talks without action. GEJ might have good intentions for this country but people around him are deceiving him. He should be on top of his game and handle things with sincerity of purpose.
What's the big deal about 2015? Power! All powers belongs to God
He should do the right thing.
All of you in support of PDP or APC, Kindly search your heart and be honest with yourself, what's in it for you?
With little education we suppose to have gone past the issue of political, religious & ethical sentiments. Kindly evaluate your life 5 years ago till now. Check your progress. Evaluate your progress (I mean real progress & hill gotten wealth) is that how you want to continue your life.
Those of you supporting GEJ/PDP, Kindly point to his real achievement. Does of you supporting APC please check all the roads that leads to your house (your street roads) is there improvement? And those of you against Buhari (kindly share his offenses)
It's profitable to seek knowledge, nobody knows it all. Try seek knowledge just to improve your life.
Forget all the hatred in your heart for other tribe or religion, Those hatred will only destroy you.
Am not impressed with the way GEJ is handling this issue of BH, if we continue like this we might not be lucky enough to see the end of things.
We need to forget about the past, do our best today, and improve our tomorrow.

You see what i am talking about? can't the president give order for these two guys to be questioned? playing politics with the lives of Nigerian is bad enough, this is humiliating and embarrassing to Nigerian. to top it up, we have some people's comment here that is VERY DAFT. they think if GEJ as their "person" and so can not scold him if he misbehave, of-cause i can not blame them, because if same happened in their various houses with their children, they cover him/her up. not knowing they are killing them for the future. and since most of you are not directly affected by the damage coursed by Boko Haram, you can look the other side.

president GEJ should please do what is right and hand over former Borno Governor Ali Modu Sheriff and a former Army Chief, Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika to the ICC for questioning and prosecution. after all it was GEJ that requires the service of Dr. Stephen Davis, the Australian negotiator. if he wasn't a credible person i don't think GEJ will approve of him. 38. This are fact. PDP is behind the killings. Abacha ones said and I quote that "Any insurgency that last more than 24 hrs in a country, the government must be behind it" This Jonatthan government is toying with lifes and people are supporting him with one sentiment or the other. These are all strategy to hold to government come 2015 by not holding elections in the affected states, quote me. We Nigerians should not be fooled, we are educated enough, Government must have a hand in this.

  39. pdp and supporters benefits in the lingering crisis: 1) power control (presidency), 2) money (presidency & the supporters). very sad. the negotiator says evidence will be provided in court may be like the icj. the govt has the option to seek more from the person he appoint to negotiate through the icj. govt has the power to prosecute legally anybody and bodies locally and internationally sponsoring the bk. why is gvt unwilling to prosecute those behind the crisis? simply interest. God save nigeria. u r at wil to cal black white and white black. nigerians leave sentiments plsssssssssssssssssssss.

  40. I dont blame d Igbos for their comments after all d are product of baby factories so their brain cannot function properly, besides d are now slaves to the Ijaws bcos their son is d president. Any right thinking person knows dat if Govt is not part of BH, d would hv stop it long ago regardless of who is involved.

    2. Igbos are being deceived by Jonathan that it will be their turn in 2015. For where even the Ijaws do not trust them. Jonathan will prefer Asari to take over instead of an Igbo man. No one will hand over the future of this country to an Igbo man.

  41. the insurgency started befor jonathan. to say that jonathan is using boko haram as tactics to win 2015 is nonsense.

  42. It is a shame that most idiotic Nigerians has joined Jonathan in taking that thing called ogogoro, akpeteshi, ofofo and indeed kaikain, reason why they think myopic.
They have all lost their memory, forgetting the fact that Jona made the assertion that Boko Haram is in his government.
I wonder what evidence they want again.
We the owner of Nigeria we are patiently waiting for 2015.
We shall collect our thing back.
Mind you election is a game of number.
We are calmly ready to join you guys vote for vote and indeed rigging for rigging.
We are too confidence of our honest chance any way.
For sure we will get back not only our stolen money but also our lost integrity and respect in the international community. TRUST US.

  43. PDP to APC back to PDP to APC = Personnel Interest. Again 1-1+1-1+1=1
    All na same same.

  44. Let's reason well, do you think that Boko Haram will tell you their real sponsor when they want to keep attacking knowing that tracking their sponsors will weaken them?? How can Ihejirika sponsor them whereas he pushed them out of other norther cities and was about to crush them before the northerners who did not want the insurgence to end accused him of committing genocide ??? When you think very well, you will know that APC is trying to divert people'S attention because they know that all Nigerians are already aware of their hands in Boko Haram. Sherrif might be sponsoring them when he was in APC and when you look at it very well, you will know that BH being a military wing of APC exposed him because he defected to PDP and accused Ihejirika because he killed many of their fighters during his time as COAS. There is no sense in saying that an Igbo/Christian want to form a caliphate in Nigeria or Islamize Nigeria. APC and Boko Haramites, Nigerians are not fools.

  49. ARANT NONSENSE! HOW CAN BOKO HARAM GIVE YOU THE REAL NAMES OF THEIR SPONSORS? COMMON SENSE WILL TELL YOU THAT BOKO HARAM MUST HAVE GIVEN THE NAMES OF THEIR REAL ENEMIES IN ORDER TO CAUSE MORE CONFUSSION. GEN AZUBUIKE EHEJIRIKA USED HIS MILITARY POWER TO CONTAINED THE ACTIVITIES OF THE SO CALLED BOKO & HARAM WHEN HE WAS CHIEF OF ARMY STAFF SO THAT THE TERRORIST GROUP HAD LITTLE POWER AS AT THEN. THIS WRITER MUST BE A PSYCHIATRIC PATIENT! HOW CAN ONE WHO IS ALREADY IN POWER SPONSOR TERRORIST GROUP THAT WILL BE FIGHTING AGAINST HIM? MR CHAIRMAN OR WHATEVER YOU CALLED URSELF PLS GO AND SIT DOWN IF HE HAVE NOTHING TO SAY. DANBANZA!

    1. OJUKWU BOY, KINDLY TELL US HOW GEN AZUBUIKE EHEJIRIKA CURTAIL BOKO HARAM. YOU MUST BE DAY DREAMING. WHETHER IT STARTED BEFORE GEJ OR NOT, SIBCE HE IS NOW THE CIC, WHAT IS HE DOING ABOUT IT. ITS VERY SAD WHEN WE SAY BUHARI, APC ETC ARE THE SPONSORES AND YET THE GOVT OF THE DAY CAN'T ARREST THEM. IS ANY SANE PERSON TELLING, CERTAIN PEOPLE, GROUPS OR POLITICAL PARTY ARE MORE POWERFUL THAN A SITTING GOVT, LET'S COME OFF IT AND CALL A SPADE A SPADE. HOW CAN THE ONE WHO HAS EVERYTHING UNDER HIM BE ACTING HELPLESS. GEJ DOES NOT DO US ANY FAVOUR RUNNING NIGERIA WELL, HE SIGNED FOR THE JOB. ITS A PITY TGAT MANY ARE USING THEIR LEGS AND NOT BRAIN, TO THINK. IF YOU WILL KNOW, IT WAS THE GOVT OF MOMODOU SHERIF THAT KILLED THE THEN LEADER OF BOKO HARAM. WHY. THE ARMY ARRESTED HIM LIVE AND HANDED HIM OVER TO BORNO GOVR AND THE POLICE. THEY KILLED HIM, SURE TO HIDE SOMETHING. HAVE WE EVER ASKED, ALL THE MEMBERS OF BOKO HARAM ARRESTED, WHERE ARE TE INFO THEY GAVE AND WHY ARE THEY STILL LIVING. SOMEONE IN POWER MUST BE PROTECTING TTHEM.

  52. This is why I picked my wife and kid and left the country because I know the commander in chief of that country does not care how many citizens he has left in his country. All he's interested in is 2015 election. My life is better here. I got a good job and my wife is about starting her training. For the rest of you in the struggle I wish you God's protection. And for the tribalism and politicians who will not say the truth your time will not exceed 2015. The clock is ticking.
