Latest on Ebola virus: US rejects Nigeria’s request for trial drug

The United States of America, yesterday, dashed the hope of an early cure for Ebola Virus victims in Nigeria when it refused to share the trial drug with Nigeria. US President Barak Obama says it would be premature to share the experimental drug with Africa.

The Federal Government had earlier reached out to the United States Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, in Atlanta, to request for the drug for treatment of EVD affected persons in Nigeria, but President Obama turned down the request, saying it would be far more beneficial to focus on prevention instead.

Nigeria recorded its first Ebola Virus disease fatality on Tuesday when one of the nurses who was one of the primary contacts of the American-Liberian, Patrick Sawyer, passed on. The doctor who treated Sawyer, who died in the country after flying into Lagos, is now ill with Ebola and six other primary contacts are currently ill with the disease in a Lagos hospital where they are quarantined.

Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu and Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku had disclosed on Wednesday after the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja that the Federal Government was awaiting the response of the request it made to the CDC on Tuesday.
Addressing the 50 African leaders at the US-African Summit in Washington, President Obama stated that it is "premature" to send an experimental medicine for the treatment of Ebola to West Africa, as he lacked enough information to approve the drug that was already being used on two American aid workers whose conditions were said to have improved by varying degrees.

"We've got to let the science guide us and I don't think all the information is in on whether this drug is helpful. The Ebola virus, both currently and in the past, is controllable if you have a strong public health infrastructure in place.

"The countries affected are the first to admit that what's happened here is the public health systems have been overwhelmed. They weren't able to identify and then isolate cases quickly enough.

"As a consequence, it spread more rapidly than has been typical with the periodic Ebola outbreaks that occurred previously," he remarked.
Palliative
As a palliative, President Obama announced plans by the US to spend $110 million annually, for three to five years, totall ing $330-$550 million, to help African nations develop rapid reaction peacekeeping forces.

The Ebola virus causes viral hemorrhagic fever, which refers to a group of viruses that affect multiple organ systems in the body and are often accompanied by bleeding.

The experimental medicine is a three-mouse monoclonal antibody, meaning that mice were exposed to fragments of the Ebola virus and then the antibodies generated within the mice's blood were harvested to create the medicine. It works by preventing the virus from entering and infecting new cells.

Developed by a San Diego Company, Mapp Biopharmaceutical, the experimental serum had never been tried before on human beings but had shown promise in small experiments with monkeys. Company documents show that four monkeys infected with Ebola survived after being given the therapy within 24 hours after infection.

In the monkeys, the experimental serum had been given within 48 hours of infection. Two of four other monkeys that started therapy within 48 hours after infection also survived. One monkey that was not treated died within five days of exposure to the virus.

  2. Where are "black" scientists? Does it mean black africa can not manufacture drugs for a disease that has been killing her people since 1976?
Despite our sons & daughters coming out with first class in foriegn universities, yet these "scientist" can not invent or improve on existing inventions from Europe & America.
I think God did not give a black man the ingenuity/wisdom to invent using materials provided by nature.
Therefore, America shld help us by supplying Africa with any drugs that can help, even if it means using Africa for experimental test.

  4. obama playing politics with ebola.......? the usa is not saying all the truth about what they know about ebola the two american Dr are doing much better than they say they are doing cos the US army has had this developed this drugs all along as a weapon for us troops in case of a possible biological weapon attack on the US since they discoverd how leathal ebola was .In other words giving it out to save a few lives in africa will be like compromising inteligence and research to a third world country if it was China they would have sent Zmapp to us Asap Nigeria can control this virus if we are quick to respond and all pay attention

  5. Can’t blame them the US government for not providing the medicines for Ebola , I think we Africans have to stop depending from US for support as we have seen their response during this crises… all they could do was sympathies us with sweet words
This is a lesson for African government and the people to wake up and act … history repeats itself and if we fail this time we need to be prepared for future.. we should make sure that our scientist and doctors are well equipped and the government should start investing in research and development of new medication …
We people have crazy for the products from US … stop using them stop going to US fro shopping and medications … stop with the corruption at all levels
Let’s all of us decide that we shall do our duties with responsibility … we have seen that money cant buy health.. so let’s stop corruption and every penny meant for development of this country has to be used in a proper ethical manner
Its our country lets at least hope our children don’t have to pay a price like we did ,, lets teach them to be honest and hardworking

    1. Hey look... dis is a matter of life and death. Who tell you if we fail now there will be future to prepare for? This diseases can wipe a continent before you say Jack Robinson... the only way out is to have that drug from America, when we survive we can then plan for the future. But if they still insist, then the disease will definitely get to America. Just a matter of time...

  11. I see no one giving a thought for the dear life of the nurse lost whilst carrying out her duty. May her soul rest in peace and grant the family the strength to bear the loss. May the Good Lord and the power of faith also heal the Doctor and other infected persons. Amen.
Let us give a thought to those in the forefront battling to cure and contain the disease too.

  19. This hopeless politicians rubbish our integrity around the world!. Instead of them taking good care of our brains in Medicine, they prefer going outside simply for the hope they get money out the donors.

Shameless devils refuse to recognize our medical practitioners that the same Western World is looking for. Do these unpatriotic Africans know that there are many African doctors in US hospitals.

Among the reasons i respect Obama is his frankness. But, i still want to advise that DONORS starting from Obama Administration to help us tell these corrupt leaders to look inward solving our predicaments from their stealing.

We destroy our own country in the name of ethnicity, religion and politics, now we want america to help us with drug, is b/c you people don't think, you are all shortsighted, even the presidents and governors that schooled abroad, what you people are stilling do not allow good reasoning for development.....you all think development is just abut good roads or constant electricity, this is an example of a poor development, a nation that can not even fight initial out break of a disease, always calling to america, boko haram problem, call america, hiv call america, maleria, call america, polio call america, oil exploration, call america, election plan, call america, it shows that 95% of you guys in government lack simple idea, and are just agent of destruction to Nigeria.

  26. Hehehehehehe! EBOLA strikes "stone age" Africa. The entire continent, comprised largely of backward thinking people, is thrown into confusion. They were praying. Calling on God as usual. God doesn't drop vaccines or cures from heaven. I wonder why they can't get that into their thick skulls.
EBOLA hit Africa in the 90s. The Americans took note. They developed a cure and locked it up in a wardrobe somewhere. A thinking society, a practical society, a sensible society. They solved the problem in the lab and not in the church. They know the solution to problems is not by handing it over to God or casting it on Jesus. They found a cure and locked it away, for a day it will be needed. We were in church and mosques, praying.
So EBOLA hit West Africa and the entire continent became jittery. Hundreds died. America kept quiet. Two Americans got infected. The Americans opened their wardrobe, flew the cure to Africa and saved their citizens. The drug worked within minutes! The two citizens were saved. Not by prayers but by commons sense preparation.
God doesn't help the praying Africans with vaccines or cures. They die in their hundreds. It's because of their sins. What else will they say?
The Americans don't help lazy minded Africans too. They make money with their vaccines, which praying Africans have to buy. Cos they won't spend their time taking the hard route to solve their problems. They will rather gather in special prayer grounds and ask God to intervene. But he does not. Except maybe through the money making Pharma companies in America.
Such is the life of those who don't think! Selah!...
