Nigeria needs leaders that will fight corruption — Amaechi

Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has said that Nigeria needs a leader that will stem the tide of corruption and transform the country.

Amaechi, who urged Christians to pray for the emergence of such a leader, explained that recent developments in Nigeria were an indication that something was wrong with the country.

The governor spoke during a meeting of Pentecostal Pastors and Followers, under the aegis of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt.

He expressed the need for religious leaders to be part of the anti-corruption crusade, just as he charged politicians to separate religion from politics.

Explaining that leaders were under obligation to serve the people, Amaechi said Nigerians’ prayers against insecurity had not been answered since the Boko Haram onslaught had not ceased.

He said, “We really need to pray for Nigeria because things are getting extremely bad and nobody should deceive us about God. God is not a bad God, God is a good God and God does not allow bad things to happen to His people.

“So, if bad things are happening to us, then something is wrong with us, and not with God.

“For now, it appears that our prayers have not been answered. If our prayers have been answered, Boko Haram, instead of reducing is increasing every day. There is no day I have not heard about a successful attack.

“Ten months ago, we had kidnapping under our control; we had armed robbery under our control. Now, we don’t have that. Last Sunday, a friend of mine was going to a burial with an NDDC staff. On that road from Obiri Ikwerre to the Airport, they shot him dead and took the NDDC man. Three or four weeks ago, they kidnapped the (former) Chairman of Ahoada-West and kept him for three weeks in Sagbama.”
