National confab, a waste of public funds – Buhari

A former Head of State, Maj. Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Monday described the ongoing national conference as a waste of public funds.

He said the huge amount being spent on the delegates and the entire process should have been put to better use because the National Assembly was in a better position to do what the conference was trying to do.

Buhari said this in a short remark at the opening of the inaugural edition of the PGF Progressive Governors-Legislative-Civil Society Roundtable, held in Abuja.

The former military ruler said, “What I express about the conference is a personal view, that it is the duty of the National Assembly.

“The elite would have got themselves together and ask the National Assembly to sponsor a bill for some amendments to the constitution.

“I do not think that at this time when governments are finding it difficult to pay salaries of workers, it can afford about N7bn to waste on a conference.”

Speaking in a similar vein, Senator Bukola Saraki said the current administration needed to be more transparent in the management of public funds.

He explained that the lack of transparency was partly responsible for the impunity of the Peoples Democratic Party-led Federal Government.

According to him, it is only in Nigeria that a President can afford to commit an impeachable offence by spending huge sums of government revenue outside appropriation without consequences.

He argued that the money being expended on the ongoing national conference was not contained in the 2014 budget.

“I told my colleagues that it might probably be coming from the missing $20bn,” Saraki added.

He also noted that the controversial subsidy regime posed a great danger to the economy itself.

Saraki said, “Let us not allow anybody to deceive us, the problem is not the subsidy but it’s management.

“The country does not use more 35 million liters of PMS while a look at the cost profile shows a huge difference that indicates that we consume more than 35 million liters.”

  4. A real waste of public fund and an avenue for excuse to “STEAL“ more public money, divert public attentions from their “EVIL AND DEVILISH“ activities and also to create more dislike and disunity among the ethnic groups, yet some “IDIOTS“ on this platform that were oppurtuned to come out of their “CAVEs“ resently simple bcos thier “UNREASONABLE AND INCOMPETENT“ brother is incharge see notting wrong in wasting such a huge amount of money to such an “UNPRODUCTIVE AND UNFRUITFUL“ gathering. It‘s really a pity and unfortunate that some of those “IDIOTS“ still sees and reffered to themselves as the “LITRATE“ among thier community members, well, i‘m not suprise sha. LIKE PAPA, LIKE PIKING AND ALSO LIKE SUPPORTERS, all of dem na “MUMU“. WHAT A sHAME!

  7. @ tarauni you are the one who is the biggest idiot on this forum. Did you hear Buharis speech at all that some elites should come together and sponsor a bill to the national assembly. Who are the elites? the same crooks who have been stealing from and deceiving us for years. the man is not in touch with reality and it is only stupid people like tarauni that believe the so called reformed elites. The conference to me is a welcome idea irrespective of the cost; we have spent more on elephant projects in the past so nothing is too much in my opinion so far as the outcome is far reaching and people orientated. the likes of buhari and bukola are only afraid of what the outcome might signify for their existence and position and society.

  10. @ the so call anonymous that was responding to Tarauni. Why can't you put sentiment aside and be reasonable for once. The moment you start calling people names during a suppose intellectual dialogue the conversation ends. Questions for you then. What do think that Nigeria could have done with N6-7B aside from that conference?
What was derived from the conference that would make lives more bearable in Nigeria?
Two wrong don't make things right. If Nigeria wants to attain the height of its potential, we must stop ethnic, religious and resource sentiment.
The national conference that was held with all that wasted money is illegal. Only the congress can make amendment to the constitution. GEJ might be on the right track if he release the report of the conference to the people in form of national briefing on TV. He can then send the recommendation to the congress for passage. Nigeria is a great country only if we pull together without sentiment. There are lots of issues that was addressed in the conference and a lot that was left out for whatever reason. Example, why should a section of a country practice a set of law that is not based on the constitutional right but on Sharia law? What can we do to curb CORRUPTION in Nigeria? Why are we not prosecution past and present looters? Why are the law makers making that much money when the people are suffering from all forms of life essential including security? The issue of living together was not address either.
