U.S. expresses concern with same sex marriage prohibition Act in Nigeria

United States Secretary of State John Kerry has expressed concern over President Goodluck Jonathan’s signing of the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act.

The Department of State, in a statement, said: “The United States is deeply concerned by Nigeria’s enactment of the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act.

“Beyond even prohibiting same sex marriage, this law dangerously restricts freedom of assembly, association, and expression for all Nigerians.

“Moreover, it is inconsistent with Nigeria’s international legal obligations and undermines the democratic reforms and human rights protections enshrined in its 1999 Constitution.

“People everywhere deserve to live in freedom and equality. No one should face violence or discrimination for who they are or who they love.

“We join with those in Nigeria who appeal for the protection of their fellow citizens’ fundamental freedoms and universal human rights.”

  1. Well, the gays in Nigeria can migrate to USA where they are free to practice their unusual relationships! Unfortunately, unlike USA, we Nigerians do have a culture.

  2. That's playing to d gallery by Nigerian govt., it's suppressive, making gays to go into hiding cos d law is incapable of changing their sexual orientation. With time, maybe in d generation to come, gay practice in Nigeria is bound to be decriminalized as it happened in UK nd other jurisdictions. It has come to stay...

  6. If America, UK and other European Nations are truly concerned, then they should begin to compile the details of gays and take them to their country/countries where they will exercise such fundamental human rights.
For us, we know there are people who practice this for some reasons base known to them, but it remains illegal and shameful. Thank you President Good Luck Jonathan.

  7. Go and hang yourself if you are not certisfied by the decision taken by NIGERIAN govement and it‘s citizens on this same sex marriege issue, the president has signed in the law and majority of NIGERIANS are most happy with the decission. So,any nigerian and some of those “fuckin whites pigs“in high places that are unhappy with such a wellcome decission taken taken by the govement should go and die like a dog in the street if they so wishes. For me TARAUNI i‘m most happy with such a wounderful decission by the president and our law maker,i really doff my hat for them. I wished and hope the punishment should be more severe. Long Life NIGERIANS.

  19. I think it is a gross breach of our fundamental human right as Africans for either Kerry, Baird or Cameron to want to push Nigeria to adopt abominable acts. As Africans we believe in our cultures and hold strongly to them. That is one aspect that the West cannot take away easily. Besides, God is still honored and magnified in our societies unlike the West and North America. It is ironic that America outlawed God from their public dormain ( including schools) and nobody sees it as breach of fundamental right to freedom of worship but the outlawing of an abominable act in Nigeria is a breach of fundamental human right. Fundamental human right probably need some sane re-definition.

Europe and North America must not denigrate our culture, they have already planted financial corruption and other anomalies in our political and social systems. We are battling with those ones. They should just stay clear of this one to avoid big trouble on their heads. Homosexuality is an unpardonable abomination.

  20. If u are so concerned about nigerian well being come and build a new high speed railway for free! Even animals that is suppose to be of lower civility do not this abomination... Haba kilode, ogini, minini ...Odun Tutu

  21. Aside having culture what of the injunctions of God. Canada and USA wants Nigeria to become a pervert nation like themselves. These countries can give honorary citizenship to all lesbians and gay; so that they can migrate to these places and leave us in peace here in Nigeria. Kudos to president Jonathan, more grace to do God's will always.

  22. They are playing double standard. They don't want to talk about corruption and our money that is being laundered into their countries. All that they are concerned is homosexuality which is abomination. If they have abandoned God completely, we have not. There are still God fearing people in Nigeria. Homosexuality is not human rights issue. It is morality and godliness issue. They should leave us alone.
