Stop celebrating Christmas, it is idolatory – Kumuyi warns

Respected cleric and founder of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor W.F Kumuyi has called on his members to stop celebrating Christmas, saying that it is idolatry.

The former university don stated this yesterday at the just concluded 2013 Deeper Life National December Retreat under the theme, Crossing Over to a New Inheritance and Prevailing over Storms of Life at the Deeper Life Conference Centre, along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The pastor in a message broadcasted live said the birth of Christ should not only be celebrated just once in year but everyday.

Kumuyi who decried how people squander millions just to celebrate ‘a one-day Christmas’ told his congregation to seek first the kingdom of God, noting that all other things would be added unto them.
Meanwhile, DailyPost observation shows that for the first time in history, members of Deeper Life would be celebrating Christmas at home, unlike in the past where they would camp till Boxing Day, December 26.

This year’s retreat, which started December 19 ended on Sunday, 22.

  1. The plain truth it is, but people have been so programmed and wrongly oriented for centuries so much such that they will see this call as anti-Christ. Should Christ himself, from wherever he is, send a message to his acclaimed followers to stop all this - the people will still find reason to say why they must keep celebrating it. He (Christ) should be celebrated every second through our actions, not just a yearly thing on a day that is not even his birthday.

  2. Celebrating CHRIST MASS(christmas)! This JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES knew for over a 100 years is just being understood by CHRISTENDOM. Hmmmm!

  3. Well said and well thought of, this xmas celebration has become more of a business and waste of money than the celebration of the birthday of Christ. Even the giving part which the secular world preaches has become just about the big business part too. The Birth, Death and RESURRECTION of Christ should be celebrated everyday in our hearts. Enough of all this Santa, father Xmas jarey.

  5. Well said sir and I respect your opinion on this.

But we should also understand that it is not the Day/Date which is December 25 that really matters but what we do in it. The question everyone should ask himself/herself is am I really celebrating the birth of Christ that day or doing my own thing. If you are celebrating the birth of Christ then you will remember how Jesus was born - in a Smelly, cold Manger and you will in accordance celebrate it in total humility and poverty of the spirit and not in the waste we see today. You will remember the reason of Christ birth and you will love to Evangelize and tell people about who Christ is and what HE has done for us all. This to me is what matters and not which day/date the world have chosen to celebrate Him. History have it on record that Christ was not born on December 25 and we understand that. But he was born around a time that they feel might be close to that period, hence choosing December 25 to celebrate it in line with what have mentioned above should not be seen as worshipping idols even if that was what the founder of the day had in mind. It is what you have in mind as you celebrate that matters.

If we check History, you will also see that Sunday that we Christian chose as our worship day was named after the SUN as a god - To worship the Sun. But we that set aside this day to worship God knows that our God rested the 7th day etc. That being said, we should all know that Christ should be celebrated everyday and not just on Sunday or on a Christmas day. So saying that we should stop celebrating Christmas because Christmas should be an everyday affair is tantamount to saying that we should stop going to church to worship God on Sunday because God should be worship everyday.

All said, it is our heart that matters not the day.

Xmas is not only celebrated in nigeria it started frm where christianity is originated so that date whuch is celebrted is a remarkable day and is apicable to us also which the bible make it clear that we should be remember the day of ourr birth so if ur own doctrine did not accept it u can not force the remaining doctrine not to do it.....the way depper life conduct there own service is diff frm Reddem and the way anglican conduct there service is diff frm CAC and we are calling one name which is God so it is the last day evrybody will know who is who

  7. it is better you xstians realize that you need to seek knowledge to know the truth about how to worship God and stop deceiving people. why will some xstians be celebrating one festival and others will not? why do you have different ways of "service"? why is it that catholics cannot attended CAC service? why are CAC accusing catholics of worshiping idols? why are some using uniform and others are not? another xstians sect that you always talk bad about is the GRAIL Centers why? let us worship GOD and stop "businessnising"!

    1. Remove d log of wood in ur eyes before removing that in another mans eyes.
Christians say what they believe based on their understanding, no violence is attached. Muslims say what they believe based on their understanding and lots of violence is attached. If what am saying is not correct quote me wrong, why are shia and sunni muslims killing each other, carrying out suicide bombing against one another?
There are different other denomination in the islamic world outside sunni and shia and most of them are violent. Why are boko haram killing both muslims and christians?
I hate it when u critisize others religion, this is not d first time, I've been reading ur comments, u are nothing but an agent of darkness cos islam symbolises darkness.

  8. Kumuyi is entitled to his opinion. Over commercialisation of Christmas is bad but to say that Christ Mass is idolatry is laughable. If Christian should chose any day to celebrate Chris's birth how is it Idolatry? Ok. It is better to celebrate you Daddies and Mummies but to celebrate Christ is idolatry. Daddy, I am not with you in this one oooh!

  9. Yes, Christmas is idolatry because it is a celebration of the Roman sun god who was born on 25th December, so celebrating it is paganic, it is not biblical either.

  11. Word! Lεt Christ bε born everyday in our hεarts and portrayed via our lifestyle and character for the World to see.

  12. so. If I celebrate Christ on a particular day that sun god is celebrated it means I am celebrating the sun god.Or if anyone should celebrate ones birth day on the day of the worship of songo or orisha does that make one a worshipper of these gods. Haba! My people perish because of lack of Philosophy and theology. We need to study more with an open mind so that people should not take advantage of ignorant people by manipulating them to their advantage.

  13. Some years back, pastor Kumuyi was told by 'God' that watching the newly invented Television then was a sin against God. That 'revelation' has faded away with time. Now he has turned to Idolizing Christmas celebration. This 'revelation' will also pass away with time. You don't throw away your computer because it is infected by virus, which is Kumuyi's message. If the Deeper Life's television ban was inspired, why was it stopped?

  14. Hear what Jesus himself said should be celebrated about him: Luke 22:19.
Is it birth, resurrection or death? He commanded?

  17. Am a muslim guy here among you, and am here to speak neutral. Although, I have so many christians as friend and I have been keeping to discuss this Origin of christmas with them over 10years. Am very much happy one of the senior pastors in nigeria can come up with this light. As far as I read your bible, cus I love reading it. Only place December 25th reflects in bible was a day a king was set out of Prison Jeremiah 52:31. It was never a day attributed to Jesus. The day of 25th of December has been a celebration time even before birth of Jesus. I have most times come across many verses of the bible that says whatever God has given to you as a command you should follow and not to add anything thereto or subtract therefrom.

Deute 12:32 "So be careful to obey all the commands I give you. You must not add anything to them or subtract anything from them.

Deute 4:2 Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the LORD your God that I give you.

Please, whatever doctrine that has no reference in your bible, you can discard them. Adding new systems into it is like telling God, He has not perfected your religion for you.

Remember Jesus said, only if you follow the commandment then you can enter the kingdom of God Matthew 5:17-18

    Shalom unto you all

  18. Since December 25th is dedicated world wide to celebrate the birth of Jesus like SUNDAY is dedicated to come together and worship God in a bigger fellowship time, nothing is wrong in celebrating CHRISTMAS (CHRIST SERVICE) as long it is done in a decent and Godly manner. Read Romans 14:17-23.
