Anti-Christmas stance: Kumuyi loses members

Some members of the Deeper Life Bible Church, who appeared not pleased with the position of the General Overseer of the church, Pastor William Kumuyi, on the celebration of Christmas, were yesterday seen attending other churches to partake in the celebration with other Christians.

Kumuyi had stirred the hornet’s nest earlier in the week when he reportedly condemned the celebration of Christmas, describing it as idolatry. His position has, however, drawn a number of reactions across the spectrum of the Christian fold.

A popular media personality and member of the church, who did not want his name mentioned, was spotted at the St. Barnabas Anglican Church Cathedral, Murtala Road, Ilorin, where he had gone to worship with members of his family as a way of protesting the position of his General Overseer.

Another member of the church also told the newsmen that he worshiped for the first time in 20 years at the Emmanuel Baptist Church, Sabo Oke in Ilorin, because of the pronouncement of the Deeper Life Church general overseer, which he did not agree with.

His words; “I was born into Baptist Mission; I attended Baptist schools in my younger days and got my childhood Christian upbringing as a Baptist. I feel bad that a man of God that I so much revered could say such a thing about our Lord Jesus Christ even in the open.

“If that position is not retracted, I may not say yet, what will be my decision as a member.”

Meanwhile it was observed yesterday that doors to many Deeper Life Churches in Ilorin, the state capital, were closed while the traditional campground of the church at Eiyenkorin was deserted when it was visited.

Sources revealed that the customary camping that used to spread to the early hours of December 26, was suddenly cut short on Sunday and members were instructed to go back home.

The Christmas celebration was, however, very peaceful in Ilorin yesterday though with the presence of armed security men in major churches.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the state, Olufemi Fabode, while speaking with journalists confirmed that the command increased the presence of its personnel around the churches in town to ensure a smooth and safe celebration.

According to him, the combined men of the usual patrol vans and the newly inaugurated ‘Operation Harmony’ were drafted out to complement security arrangement in the city while the number of patrols at night were also increased to include several stop and search spots at many locations during the night.

  2. This man of God is saying the truth. This is hw Jesus will deny many of you on the day of judgement who claimed to be his followers. You better repent and accept only one God as you saviour before its too late. Jumping from one church to the other is not the solution.

  3. Let them Go, they are all hypocrites.

That is a simple test of dicipleship. If all men of God can come out and tell the gospel truth of the bible. You will discover that only very few, may be about 10 percent of church goers are Christian.

Afterall, Jesus disciple all left him like that, remain only 12.

Kumuyi has not lost members, he has only been able to expose some hypocrites that are claiming to follow his teaching.

  6. You guys are so funny, are you saying Deeper life is the church approved by God and other brethrens are not of God? Where is the body of Christ as bible instructed. When the pastor's son did wedding last time in a form that was always preached against by the church, was the pastor himself not attend, or was he not the father on the bride? But church members are not allowed to do so as they will be termed a worldly people. We all have a leading spirit, it is in the bible, allow God to talk to you (we all) and not allow one pastor or individual to be confusing us. Who is even the george for God on earth, why will someone be pronouncing indirect georgement of people in order to be followed. Just like chris okotie too mentioned last time about chatolic. We all have simmilar capability of spirit to hear from God and to be closer to God, instead many wait to hear from pastors for pronounciation of what God wants or hate, note, I am not saying don't go to church, but also believe in your ability to know God, not just what a pastor says that is final. May God help us all in the mighty name our Lord Jesus Christ (amen).

  8. Truth has always attracted sharp criticism anywhere anytime. Man's emotion and sentiment often resist rationality of truth. Jesus our Lord himself attached little or no importance to his birthday; neither did his early church. He spoke often about his death and resurrection than his birthday. Can we be more Christian than Christ who we claim to follow? Would he had forgotten to command us to observe his birthday after his departure like he did for the Lord'supper? Whoever is born by the truth(God's word) will submit to the truth. By their fruits, you will know them. If they are truly members of the church as claimed by journalists, I think it is good for the church.

  10. Kumuyi didn't say anything bad abt Christ. All He was saying is that Christmas is idolatry in that in that people have abandoned the main reason for christmas and are pursuing other things. Kumuyi is still a follower of Jesus Christ FYI. Jesus is still Lord. His Death and resurrection is the reason for our faith. He came to save the world from sin. People are using the Xmas day to commit atrocities etc that's why kumuyi had to comment.

  12. I wish we know the implication of what we are doing. What was it called before and why was it called now called christmas? What does the bible meant by 'whatever you do in word or in deed do it all to the glory of God'. Tell me one event that announce christ to the world than christmas? Kumuyi why do you go to church on sunday? And pls can an unbeliever that repented use the same shoe he wore to shrine to church? Where was it mention in the bible that God's ministers must put on English wears to the pulpit? Our dogmatic must not lead us taking the place of God.

I heard what the man of God said though surprised but I have to find out I Googled "The Origin of Christmas" after reading through I couldn't tell my neighbour happy Xmas even when my friends says happy Xmas I couldn't say same to you. You can do same is not a good thing to condemned men of God same time I so much Thank pastor Kumuyi for making me know this. Both the xmas, santa claus, tree have different meaning May God help our understanding.

  15. Pls read the history of how Xmas came to be.It is a way to redirect attention from idolatry to JESUS. It is a time to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ

  16. I've gone through the Origin of Christmas and find out that actually it came from an idolatry background. Thank you Pastor for making me know this.

  17. I read someone up there said Jesus did not attach much importance to his birth, if their is no much importance God will not have made his start to so shine that the 3 wise men travelled all the from far east for days to trace him. If his birth was not impirtant God's angel would not come from heaven. All of us grow to know more about the birth of Christ during Chritmas those days when Jesus Christ films woulb be shown on NTA and chanel 8 for 3 days, apart from the preaching we hear in the church, this sink more into our brains as children back then. And now someone is saying Christmas is idolatry....

  18. Sunday is a day for Baal worship. As the name implies, it is a day dedicated to worship the sun god, Monday is for moon. Let idol worshippers take all the days God created. Christians should sanctimoniously fold their hands and dash out all days

  19. People hate the truth and most church goer do not know the Bible neither do they care. The Holy Bible is the word of God that explained how we should live our lives as children of God. There is nothing like Christmas there neither was our Lord Jesus born on 25th. His Apostles never told us to celebrate the birth of the Lord Jesus so, what Pastor Kumuyi said is borne out of the mindset of correcting people. If because of that people want to leave the church, they should leave as they never belong to the church of Jesus. The bible said you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.

  20. the bible says that any that is accepted in this word is accepted in heaven vice versa so let us not condemn it but apraise it

  21. Whether the Lord Jesus was born on the 25th of December or not is not the issue. The issue is, He was born on a particular day. If some people decide to celebrate the day Jesus was born and others decide not to celebrate it, that is left to them. I do not see anything wrong here. Romans 14: 5 & 6 says, one person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord (NIV). We do the same to Sunday. Sunday is not the Sabbath day. The Sabbath is Saturday. It actually begins, 6pm on Friday and ends 6pm on Saturday. But the body of Christ observes Sunday as the day of worship. Do we now say that the Churches observing Sunday as the day of worship are doing the wrong thing? I submit that, whatsoever you do, do all as to the Lord. Outside of that, something is wrong.

yet let DLBC be accommodating and stop behaving most holiest

  23. We all know that the word christmas is not even in the Bible. So the Pastor is right. This year's retreat never ended suddenly. The date(19th-22nd December) was fixed weeks ahead of the retreat. Mind how you present issues.

  24. Christmas in d bible or not, as long as it was set aside for my lord Jesus, I celebrate with millions who believe in his birth, and will always eat my rice and chicken and thank God every year.

  25. if the sun god was worshipped on sunday and we worship the true God the same day, which one are we worshipping. We all know christ was not born that day but to phase out idolatery it was adopted that is not a sin but to the glory of God. Why is he talking now, where was kumuyi 30 years ago. I WONDER WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO DEEPER LIFE AFTER KUMUYI'S DEATH as ther youths are leaving in droves. The purpose is what matters and not what others are doing the same day.
