We need a female president in Nigeria - Fashola, Oshiomhole

Governors Adams Oshomhole and Babatunde Fashola of Edo and Lagos States respectively say it is time for Nigeria to have a female president as male presidency has clearly failed the nation.

The duo spoke at the opening ceremony of the 2013 National Women Conference organized by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials, COWLSO, held at the Eko Hotels and Suits, Victoria Island, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on Tuesday.

Speaking at the conference, with the theme: See Beyond Today: Enhance the Quality of Life, Oshiomhole, who declared the conference open, said the nation had decided to hold a national conference to deliberate on ethnicity and the geographical set up of the country, but wondered why the issue of female presidency was not brought into the front burner.

The Edo state governor stressed that it was time Nigeria deliberate to have a female president at the helms of affairs in the midst of absolute failure by the male counterpart who had been ruling the nation since 1960.

Oshiomhole said the feat achieved by the late former British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher had not be rivaled till this moment, saying that the woman was able to take Britain to an enviable height.

“There are evidences around the world where women have led. There is no question in my mind that we need to create a level playing field for the women,” he stated.

In his goodwill message, Fashola said there was the need for women to take over the leadership of this nation as they had shown that they could be better leaders more than the male folk.

“We are waiting for the women to take over. Our world will be better if women take over. The best emerging economy today in the world is being driven by women. The women have been there with me in my government,” he said.

The governor also spoke on the need to control the burgeoning population of the nation, in the midst of pervading and rising cases of hunger in the land.

Fashola stated that statistics had it that two-third of the world’s seven billion population lived in abject poverty and that Nigerian women had the power to control the rising population of the nation.

“Can we consciously start slowing down the way we grow our population? If two-third already live in poverty, what chance for those coming after us if we are already in poverty?” He asked.

According to Fashola, “people are shy discussing this issue; the earlier we talk about it, the better. In 1970, the population of London was 8.5 million while Lagos was then 1.4 million.

“Today, London has dropped about one million population while Lagos has gone up to reach about 20 million. We can march out of poverty if we plan well.”

Fashola added that the Lagos State Government was already undergoing registration of all Lagosians for adequate planning for the population, urging the women register and to mobilize others to do the same so that government could plan for the future of their children.

  5. I hope U're not planing to hand LAGOS over to TINUBU'S WIFE. A woman can not rule this corrupt land, she will be tossed around by the WICKED & GREEDY male politicians we have in our politics. Ask PATRICIA ETTEH and U'll understand better. So FASH & ADAMS, I think that call is uncalled for.

  6. The contest should be between Oduah, Eteh and Dezianne. I vote for the most corrupt of the trio. They are the most competent if Nigeria is to regain her place as second or third most corrup country

  10. Nigeria is not the same as the UK or Liberia. Nigeria is a complex country, too complex for any woman to lead.

The UK is not corrupt and lawless like Nigeria. The reason why Margaret Thatcher led successfully in the UK is because of the efficient legal system. Also, corruption is not celebrated in the UK as in Nigeria. And the infrastructure system in the UK is fully built to support everybody, community and business.

The current administration of President Jonathan has done a lot of good for the rich people in Nigeria but nothing for the poor populace. The Nigeria private sector is not buoyant as in the UK and many Nigerians are depending on the government for work. The reality is that the Nigerian government cannot employ everyone. Also, the Nigerian government cannot provide contracts for all private businesses.

The recipe for development in Nigeria is for the government to boost power supply and strengthen transport network. The UK has no problem of power supply and no problem with its transport system. These provided support for the administration of Lady Thatcher in the UK.

Ready and available power supply will allow entrepreneurs to start their own businesses to relief the government of providing jobs for everybody. Available power supply is a panacea for Nigeria development.

Nigerian roads are death traps and many leaders thought air travel was better. The evidences of air disasters and near disasters are clear. Unfortunately, the air space in Nigeria is more dangerous than the road network and rail transport system is not developed. A good transport system has an effective and efficient mixture of air, road, sea and rail network as in the UK. The UK transport system provided support for Lady Thatcher administration in the UK.

Nigeria cannot support a female President because the country needs a decisive and radical leader. In fact, no female can be a President in Nigeria at this time of chaos and anarchy. Presidency in Nigeria today is like being in a war zone with radical decision making.

The current President of Nigeria is not decisive and radical. As a result, chaos, anarchy and indiscipline has taken over. I wish Nigeria can return to the administration of Buhari and Idiagbon. At that time, there was war against indiscipline.

  12. I have no problem with female leadership at any level in the country, but Nigerian women in leadership positions have proven to be just as corrupt as the men. The analogy with Margaret Thatcher is inappropriate because Mrs Thatcher possessed her personal trait and character that will not be matched by the highest caliber of Nigerian women. Without seriously addressing corruption in the country, Nigeria is nothing but wasted space under God's creation, regardless of the sex of its leadership. Until the country starts sending people to the guillotine instead of rewarding evil as has always been the practice, nothing will ever change. Odua, Deziani-Madueke, etc are all symbols of Nigeria's corruption and incompetence. Whoever that designated these individuals to positions of leadership in Nigeria will have a lot to answer before the Almighty.

  13. ARRANT NONSENSE! The women folk have so far shown us that they are not better than men.Oduah,Patricia Etteh,Diezani etc. have been wworse than so many men in terms of corrupt practices. We should be thinking of how to embrace the problems of Nigeria instead of being more concerned with gender issues......Chris

  14. Pls,
Ette has been vindicated by Dimeji Bankole Gate and Farcrook Lawan(ted) Fence.

Ette was a victim of a conspiracy by some nothern idiots whose ego(s) can't submit to a woman as speaker.

The case was thrown out. That's why Dimeji/Farouk had nemesis to contend with. Tambuwal will soon follow.

  17. I would not have been surprised if such plea has been credited to rogue politicians like Oshiomhole alone. Mr Babs Fasola is a gentleman,a patriotic, selfless leader. I remember a day we travelled on the same BA aircraft from Lagos to London. He was contended with the 1st class cabin like any ordinary elite. He could have opted for a private jet. Now to the point: he would not vouch for women like Oduah, finance and petroleum minister etc to step into his shoes at the expiration of his tenure.Nigerian women leaders are even more corrupt than their male counterparts.

  18. I guess our politcians foresee trouble looming ahead. Private jets to flee, and if that fails,bullet-proof cars to escape any mob. Now it's arrangements to get their loots out through oversea bank accounts.

  19. Let Edo state start first to have woman governor .
