BREAKING: Plane crashes at Lagos Airport, many dead, six survivors rushed to hospital



Reports reaching us indicate that a plane crash has occurred at the Lagos airport.


The body of Dr Olusegun Agagu, former Governor of Ondo state, was reportedly being conveyed in the plane by several members of his family when it crashed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

The politician died suddenly at his home in Lagos on 13 September. He was due to be laid to rest on 4 October at St Paul's Anglican Church in the district of Iju-Odo.

A witness said the crash occurred at the local wing of the airport close to the section were JET-A1, plane fuel, is stored.

Fire service officials were seen evacuating the occupants of the plane.


The spokesman of the Nigeria aviation agencies, Yakubu Datti, asked for more time to get details of the incident.


Update.

11:23 AM - The engine failed on takeoff and it crash-landed and burst into flames. Twenty people were on board,” said Supo Atobatele, spokesman for the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency.

NE has learnt that the crash involved a 20-seater  Associated airline jet flying to Akure, Ondo State.
An eye witness said the plane believed to be carrying passengers heading for the burial of former Ondo State governor, Olusegun Agagu  crashed on take off.

12:00 PM - About 20 passengers on the crashed plane. Most of the passengers who perished in the air crash are believed to be family members of the late governor and officials of Ondo state government.

 The plane was said to have crashed around 9.20am immediately after take-off into the compound of a private firm, around the MMIA access gate.

Spokesman of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, Yakubu Datti, speaking with TV station, Al Jazeera, on telephone moments ago said the crashed plane was carrying 20 passengers and was en-route Lagos to Akure. “The engine failed,” he said.

He said it was a propeller aircraft operated by Associated Airline. There are five survivors, he said. He also confirmed that the survivors have been rushed to a nearby hospital.

He added that the Black Box of the aircraft have been recovered and investigation will commence immediately.

He spoke from the crash site.

1:31 PM - A 6th survivor confirmed, doctors battling hard in nearby hospital to save. However 9 bodies have been recovered so far, all confirmed dead.

The Ondo State Government received with shock the news of the crash of the plane bearing the corpse of the former Governor of Ondo State, Dr Olusegun Agagu, as it was taking off from Lagos.
A commissioner, family members, associates and other top government officials were also involved in the crash.

Information available indicates that there were casualties and a few survivors of this unfortunate crash. We are however still expecting more information.

No doubt, this is an unfortunate disaster in the life of our dear State. We can only pray that God will visit the State with mercy and give us all the strength to bear these unfortunate losses.

We ask all residents to be in a sober and prayerful mood at these trying times as God is indeed the only person we should call upon in this period.

Government assures that further and better information will be released as soon as they are available.

  5. Look at that lifeless body. Alive that body will feel he owns the world, but in death it is nothing but a waste/food for decomposers. That is an end that awaits every living thing, including the thought provoking El-"madman" Matosky as some have been calling me on this forum. This tells us all one thing, "Life itself is VANITY" Its so painful to lose a love one even if that love one is "U/ME". So for those of us fighting, cursing, even threatening others on this forum, we all must surely leave this world, whether as Nigerian or a unit from a divided Nigeria. For those that lost their loved ones in this tragedy my message is "Take heart, for TIME will heal the pain U feel at heart now"
