NO WORK, NO PAY: FG stops salaries of striking lecturers

As the ongoing strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, enters the fourth month, there are strong indications that the Federal Government has commenced the implementation of the "No Work, No Pay" rule.

It was gathered from a reliable source at the National Universities Commission, NUC, that the government has passed a directive to the various universities governing councils to stop payment of salaries of the striking lecturers.

The ASUU Zonal Chairman in Abuja, Mr Clement Chup confirmed this yesterday after a zonal conference of ASUU, University of Abuja chapter, which took place at the Gwagwalada campus to review the nationwide strike.

He said his colleagues were yet to receive their September salaries.

According to him, "we have resorted to other welfare strategies to cope with the effect of the strike, particularly to contain the various attempts by government to break the resolve of the union. The Federal Government has through the National Universities Commission, directed universities to stop the payment of our salaries effective September this year and since then our salaries have not been paid.

"Part of the welfare strategy, involved distributing food items, giving out soft loans and cash advances to members."

He urged members of the public to ignore the rumour that the strike has been called off.

He said: "Nigerians should disregard rumours making the rounds that the three months old strike has been called off", adding that "the strike continues until the government demonstrates a positive inclination towards implementing the 2009 agreements and the 2012 Memorandum of Understanding signed by both parties."

  1. No wonder they run the country like a lawless town. Agreements and the constitution have no weight in the face of our leaders. Signed agreement you will not fulfil yet you threaten the very ones you have faulted. I continue to see similarity with yahoo yahoo boys and Nigerian Govt. officials. All of then na 419.

  2. This is a clear evidence why ASUU and the FG are useless in the principle of negotiation.

Negotiation is not about seeking to outperform your opponent. In negotiation, all parties must be willing to lose something for dispute to end. It is not a showcasing of power but a sensible display of professionalism and ethics.

In all of the strike and associated chaos, everyone suffers. And Nigeria has become shamed by every foreign country because this type of strike is unique to Nigeria. No responsible government around the world allows strike of more than one day to five days.

In all of this strike, can we rank any of our universities above any other in the world?

The FG and ASUU should grow up.

  5. When you signed agreement with someone, what stop you from doing your part. Some or if not all of these prof. Spend their money (although it the student that pay for all the research done in the university) to carry out reseach for year and their salary with these earned allowance is not up to N600k per month while members of the national assembly were bold to say their salary per month is not more than N900k although we all know their take home pay is more than N29m monthly. You are telling ASUU to go back to classroom, that will not happen. The government. Is looking for Anarchy and that is what they will get. Whether they are working or not, their salary most be paid because they are not the one breaking the agreement.
