A group of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors which met with President Goodluck Jonathan at the Aso Rock villa tonight agreed to observe a “ceasefire” until final discussions on October 7 to iron out differences they have with the president.

An aide to President Jonathan said the air around the meeting gave them hope that the disagreements between the president’s faction and the ‘New PDP’ might be resolved on that date.

But one of the governors in attendance told SaharaReporters the meeting specifically achieved only the specific purpose of compelling both sides to avoid escalating the issues further.

He some of them were opposed to issuing a statement at the end of tonight’s out of concern that it could be manipulated by the president’s team.

He pointed out that before they could iron out any differences, the governor of Cross Rivers State, Liyel Imoke, had already drafted a statement to which they agreed so as to give peace a chance. the handwritten statement was later read by the Niger State governor, Babangida Aliyu

The focus of tonight’s meeting was mostly Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who members of Mr. Jonathan’s team presented as being too “belligerent” and having had an upper hand in the media.
The president reportedly told Amaechi to allow a statement to be issued if he doesn’t have anything personal against him.

Governor Amaechi reportedly replied he does not, adding that it would however make more sense to wait till October 7 before any statement was issued.

The meeting with the governors preceded the enlarged meeting at the villa today where they agreed not to question Mr. Jonathan’s firing of Ministers offloaded last week by.

  1. This is a tactical move by GEJ's team to buy more time for themselves in order to further divide the newPDP and G-7 governors before the October 7th meeting. I believe GEJ and his team seems to be penetrating the newPDP with their divide and rule strategies. Example of such move, I believe is the resignation of Tanko Isiaku Gwamna from being the National Treasurer Of newPDP . If they newPDP and G-7 governors are not strong and united enough, GEJ and his team would have divided and weaken them before their October 7th meeting.

    1. All they are fightinhg for is their future share of money and power with the privilage to abuse it. Nothing about serving the interest of the people. Nigerians are sitting and watching their nation collapse with the naïve hope that APC will save us. Anyway our leaders are frankly a reflection of us so if you change these rulers a thousand times you will get the same result. The. Disintegration of 2015 will likely happen and we all know it

  9. Submission to authority is a biblical imperative.Governors who aspire to have subjective followership must also be subject to senior authority. People should not take the humble democratic qualities of GEJ as weakness. The power of incumbency can be invoked if pushed to the wall. I think no Nigerian President after the military affliction has been as tolerant as GEF. Let every other president in waiting be cool enough to wait for his time. Vaulting ambition does not crown anybody king, but rather destroys those who are given to it. All two-time Governors should settle down and enjoy their lots before aspiring for presidential loots. If u do not respect a king, kingship will not reach you because throughout history it is known that over ambitious people end up as abusers of power.
