Unemployment: Graduates smile to banks washing cars in Kaduna

Graduates have taken over most car wash businesses in Kaduna metropolis to end their endless search for formal jobs.

A correspondent who went round the city reports that the operators were making brisk business and smiling to the banks.

Julius Samba, a graduate of the University of Maiduguri, who operates a car wash centre at Poly Gate, said he ventured into the business when he realised he was wasting his “precious time searching for non existing jobs”.

According to him, he washes as much as 25 cars on a good day and now makes between N80,000 and N100,000 a month.

He said, “i would not go to work for anyone if offered a job now, with 8 persons working for me.”

Mr kelechi Humphrey, who graduated from the University of Abuja in 2009 and now runs a car washing outfit at Barnawa area of the city, said he makes as much as N120, 000 a month.

He told NAN that he charges between N300 and N500 depending on the nature of the car, and makes an average of N4000 daily.

Humphrey advised unemployed youths to utilise their time positively, instead of resorting to acts that would be inimical to their future.

Mr John Vatt, a patron said his street was bad and needed to wash his car before going out everyday, and commended the initiative of the youths in setting up car wash businesses.

Another patron, Ahmed Usman, said car wash washing centres were contributing significantly to reducing unemployment and urged the government to create a special fund to support them. (NAN)

    1. What is the big deal about the university degree if not to make money and put food on your table.u better be realistic and put your degree aside and do whatever u need to provide for your family.that's d sign of the times in Naija now.besides I am a masters degree holder and I'm not saying this cos I'm uneducated.

    2. Please change your perception on what job a graduate does. As a graduate, he is better placed to manage any business and expand it to higher levels than an illiterate can achieve. Business is business, but how well the university learnings impact on it, is what counts and differentiates the graduate from others.

  3. I am a graduate that has worked for 4 companies for 8yeaars now..a couple of them are good multinationals but I still dream to own a business. Education to me is just a foundation to run whatever you want to do with yourself in the future better. If these guys are smart, in 2, 3 years they could have 3-4 car wash spots and the sky is the limit for them. We need (o bring out the enterprenurial spirit in our youth and not fold our arms and join d bandwagon of jobseekers. Not everybody should work for someoneelse.

  4. @Anonymous 5:46... something is definitely not right. In fact, there is more wrong than right and it goes much much deeper than the government. Not only are there not enough jobs, but, the schools are churning out such incompetent graduates that one wonders how they even got past secondary school, let alone university.
But, I do applaud these people for finally realising that the government is not and has never been the solution to Nigeria's problems. They are making their money, and in Kaduna, N100,000/month goes a very long way (a two bedroom house can be about 100,000/year!)

  6. The truth is that the Nigerian government will never be able to employ even 20% of our graduates. What they should focus on is affordable and quality education which should arm our youth on what it takes to run your business. Be it a car wash or business center, we need to explore our potentials. That us the strength of the middle class. You can never get rich as a civil servants unless you are a thieve. The US prides itself as having the highest number of self made entrepreneurs in the world and that is why it can recover from any sign of recession very quickly. We just need good leaders and conducive environment...Nigerian are bright and I see good things ahead. Congrats to those chaps.
