The Hype on ‘deportation’ of Igbos is political – Fashola

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola on Thursday said the ongoing controversy trailing the decision of the government to send some Igbos back to their villages is political.

The governor said this after inspecting the ongoing light rail project and jetties at Mile 12 area of the state.

He added that the propaganda was meant to smear the reputation and credibility of Lagos and the ruling party in the state.

Fashola said, “It is unfortunate that my colleague governor has made this a media issue. As I speak, I haven’t received any telephone call or letter from him to complain. I don’t think that is the way government works. On less important matters, he had called me before.

“This is a political season and Anambra will be up for contest. And in a political season, unusual things happen. It is really important to say that our hospitality in Lagos State is legendary.

“There is a large Igbo community in the state. They are doing their businesses peacefully. There is too much at stake for anyone to begin to incite the Igbo community against their host state.

“There is too much at stake here. It is a very dangerous and unwarranted precedent. I hope that common sense will prevail here.”

Fashola added that the relationship between the Igbo and the government would not break because of the issue, saying the government and the residents had a strong bond.

The governor also said his administration was determined to complete the rail project, adding much that progress had been made on the tracking.

Fashola, who pointed out that five major transport solutions were being implemented simultaneously in the state, said the government-owned ferry services would be subsidised when it starts operations.

He said the state government had issued licences to 59 operators who had in turn acquired 109 ferries.
Meanwhile, an Igbo group, Aka Ikenga has condemned the ‘deportation’ of people regarded as beggars from Lagos to Onitsha, Anambra State.

President of the group, Chief Goddy Uwazurike, at a press conference on Thursday in Lagos, said the development was against Sections 35 and 41 of the 1999 Nigeria Constitution.

Uwazurike maintained that if necessary steps were not taken by Fashola, the newly-registered All Progressives Congress would be wrongly perceived in the East and Nigeria at large.

“We want the governor to be careful of some of his actions because I am sure this will not be the way he wants to reward over 90 per cent of the Igbo in Lagos that voted for him,” he said.

Uwazurike, who described the development as a criminal and inhuman act, lamented the method of operation of the Kick Against Indiscipline officers.

  2. Mr Governor, no matter how you try to explain your undemocratic action, just admit you are wrong and apologise. What happens to section 40 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which guarantees the freedom of movement? As a Governor, you ought to have liaise with their respective State Governors before deporting them. Why should the Governor call you when you did not inform him before taking your action against his people. Respect beget respect they say. You do not have the guts to remove Touts (Agbero)from our roads but you can deport innocent Ibos. Please wake up as your popularity is waning and depleting in Nigeria. You pretend to be democratic but you are the most undemocratic Governor in Nigeria. You are lucky that ACN has merged to form APC, if not Lagos would have loss Lagos.

  3. What nonsense is Gov.Fashola insinuating? No attempt to politicize the illegal actions of the LAST Govt. will be acceptable. He should be sensible enough to immediately apologize to the people concerned and take positive steps to assuage the aggrieved feelings of the Igbo people!

  4. Bravo, Fashola! It is not every time that I agree with you on issues but I totally concur with you on this.

In short, we do not need to dissipate unnecessary energy and heating up ourselves in the process. There is no base depth politicians will not sink but on this occasion, I am totally aghast that the Anambra state gov that I thought was above pettiness and base political shenanigans will slide this down the slope. All I can say is: shame.

  5. Mr Townsend you just spoke utter nonsense. U're obviously pro Acn and talking as such. What is wrong is wrong. Gov Fashola has erred and should apologise to all parties concerned. The Nigerian constitution provides for freedom of movement for everybody and does not give any state govt licence to deport anybody. If they have committed a crime (those deported)then all he should have done was charge them to court. As far as you are a Nigerian you have the right to live anywhere you so desire without fear or favour. Its people like you (sycophants) who are always ready to grease politicians ego that the start to see themselves as political gods and think they can do no wrong. I am also a fan of BRT but on this issue he is very very wrong and if taking to court will lose on this issue.

  9. He knew straight away that his action is unconstitutional, that's why he denied it. Gov Fashola! Don't take laws into ur hands ,because this may be the beginning of ur fall, upon all the good igbo's are doing to build and develop ur swarmpy bushes @ ojoalaba etc.

In the other way round,Maybe is a way to vent his anger over al-mustafah's release from prison by President Goodluck.

  11. Where were you when this homeless peaple were roaming about the street why are you heating up the polity. when peaple from other states were send back to their various state now an igbo tribe. A similar case happen in kano when the govr stand out to fight canterfit drug produser whom comprise all tribes but majorly igbo. But the igbo spare head the group to fight the govnr for stopingthem from criminal business and even involves some igbo Senators whom were accusing the govr of frustrating the indigbo business. Let's put tribalism out of this issue let obi provide them shelter if truely he felt for them and not to see them as liability sent back to his state.

  12. The action came quite on time, just to tell the Igbos what to expect should his master and his APC eventually come to power. You dumped people in his territory without calling him and you expect him to call you before crying foul. SAN! You have taught me that Nigerians can be deported from their own Country or they now Biafrans?
