Deportation: Nollywood Star, Jide Kosoko defends Lagos

Veteran Nollywood actor, Jide Kosoko, on Thursday said there was nothing wrong with the alleged deportation of the destitute to their home state by the Lagos State Government.

Kosoko, a Lagos prince, stated that the government deported people who constituted a nuisance in the state to their hometowns because the metropolis was becoming over populated.

He said, “I disagree with the people criticising the deportation. There are reasons for everything. Since there have been negotiations between Lagos and the state concerned and the government believes their home state would take better care of them, I think the action was appropriate.”

Kosoko said even though Nigerians were free to live anywhere in the country, people should not abuse the privilege by becoming a nuisance.

“We don’t need to shy away from the fact that Lagos is over-populated because of its commercial advantage. Anybody doing a legitimate work here is entitled to stay but a situation where they are turning themselves to a nuisance in the state and they would go as far as inviting others to come is not acceptable,” the actor stated.

He said when the okada business began, it started with skilled riders until some people took advantage of the business idea and started creating problems.

He stated that there were actually states with worse laws than Lagos, where people got their arms cut off because of crimes and such people saw Lagos as a place for greener pastures.

He noted that with the Lagos State government’s policy, the roads are safer.

Kosoko said that the action should not be restricted to Lagos.

“Let’s not deceive ourselves, look at the highways, are they not better? I am not speaking for the government but for myself. To me, whoever constitutes a nuisance in any state, not just Lagos, let them be sent back home.

“It is very unfortunate that we are in a multi-ethnic country; that is the major problem we are having. We find it difficult to say the truth,” he said.

  1. Mr Jide,
Why do we have government in place if we cant reposition or take care of people like that? Is government made for people like you? Keeping someone in detention camp for more than 7 months can turn a sane man into a destitute or even worse as some of them died under detention. These people have God whom they look up to. Let us not ignore that fact on the alter of tribalism.

  4. Fellow Nigerians, Jide's reasonining is reasonable. The fact is those deported were born by some people from defined communities in the states they were deported to. Let the states help to identify their home towns down to the family yards and see if the family from where the deportees originated will be happy seeing their son/daughter as destitute they will not take care. We shy away from reality and it is affecting all facets of our lifes. If Lagos state set up destitute home and call on governors of the affected states to send money to keep them, will they answer? Or lagos should keep spending in the name of one Nigeria? Bansa!

  6. Now can U compare Jide's write up wit that of the other fool called Kayode? He was very objective, detrabalised and made a lot of sense dan the Bloke whose intention is 2 spark off hate, agitation and unnecessary tribal conflict coz of Political selfish interest! Shame on Kayode!!! Nice one Jide!!!

  7. As far as the objective is for a better environment for all of us,there's nothing wrong with relocating people who don,t have anything doing who also constitute a nuisance to the locality, sane or insane. It should be made a general practice by all states of the federation. If it is done on these sincere grounds, there shouldn't be any problem. What got me disgruntled about the relocation done by Lagos state is they way they were said to have been abandoned at about 3am at upper Iweka,a very dangerous area at such an ungodly hour. If this is true,it shouldn't be so. I would have preferred they were abandonded for their state govt.at their govt house since they didn't respond to the several calls from the Lagos state govt. I do not think it would have created the kind of negative sensation it did if it was done this way. Destitutes are really a nuisance and something really needs to be done to curb the menace, therefore I think any state govt taking this measure is doing well but it must be done rightly.

  8. Jide is tribalist. I hope he has never lived in another place except Lagos. Whether his is from lagos or not he and lagos govt have no right to discriminate against the poor and less priveledged. If he feels God has blessed him and the gov'nor to oppress the needy, let remember God is the only one who raises the poor from dust to grace and brings down the king/rich to grass/dust. God is watching fashola and his wicked supporters and sympathisers such fani kayode who ran MAD in Ghana and still behaves and talks like a mad man.

  9. I live in Ikoyi but during last easterholidays ,i travelled to Epe a rural town in lagos state to purchase bushmeat, fresh fish, snails and other condiments which are cheaply abundant at the epe market by the large river...u need a local guide to take you around this market if you dont speak yoruba lingo...my unsolicited guide was a young lady with very big sexy eyeballs who spoke pasable pidgin english...in the course of our transactions she told me she has never travelld to Eko (lagos) and that if she sees an opportunity , she will not return to epe...in all honesty, if i didnt have a wife I should have immediately taken her away and polish her up..maybe marry her....
Lagos is the new york of 9ja..Abuja can never be lagos... Do you notice that all artiste relocate to lagos to be accepted...When STYL PLUS some yoruba guys decided to seek greener pastures in Abuja, their blossoming careers ended midstream..

  11. Good one Mr Jendor,Lagos is not 'no man's land'. Every individual originated from somewhere.'If you can't go front again then you go back'. Kabbish

  12. The truth must be told, anyone who refuses to here let him or her go to blazes. The first armed robber in Nigeria was an Igbo man.
    Check your history.

  13. Dunno pple are so tribalistic! U display open hatred for ur fellow Nigerians. Igbo, yoruba , hausa, we are all one Nigerians.

  14. Why is it difficult for pple to think clearly? Ogun, oyo and osun states have their pple returned to them by lagos govt even when still under pdp govt,we dont have uproar like this
Why are igbo hate truth and clear, proper definition of situation. If pple must know they also increased lagos problem by giving birth to large no of children thereby causing different policy change. Can an averege yoruba man lay claim to warri, onitsha or rivers?. They should change their state to become habitable and stop being a refugee all about.

But remember what comes around goes around. Igbos are insulted, humiliated descriminated cos they are Igbos today, tomorrow only God knows what tomorrow holds. I rest my case.

  18. i still wonder the rationale or supporting Fashola in this act. I adore and respect Fashola but lets look objectively at this.

is it right to pick up destitutes from the street, travel 500 km and drop them in another street?
if there is no explanation there should be an apology. yes we all want Lagos to be clean of Destitutes have anyone thought that if those people were real destitutes we will not be debating this. nobody will know they were deported becaause they will run away in fear of being re arrested. they went to the police and the media to report their cases and that brought us to where we are. Obviously this deportation exercise has been going on unnoticed. Now with the way Govt works Fashola may be unaware of all this but in thi situation, he is expected to come out and apologise to Anambra state Govt. Arrogrance breeds hatred and enemity. leaders are not expected to be arrogant

  19. I want to ask you some questions!!!

Are you saying that only those are not actually held from Lagos are the ones constituting nuisance?

Don't you think the Governor is over reacting?

Why is he closing shops, market and churches that belongs to other tribes?

Fact * Even in united states or any other advance countries, you will find worst than what 's happening in Nigeria. I believe you have traveled to some of these countries, Lagos state or Nigeria at large cannot be exempted.
