‘Old number plates invalid by Sept 30, 2013’

The Federal Road Safety Commission has warned that old number plates will become invalid by September 30, 2013.

Some months ago, the commission introduced new number plates which will replace the old ones.
The commission said in a post on Facebook on Thursday that from October 1, 2013, it would amount to an offence for anyone to use the old number plates.

It said a standard replacement fee of N10,000 had been set for each number plate while a new number plate costs N12,500, excluding registration fees which would be determined by state governments.
It said, “By October 1, 2013, it will be an offence for any owner or operator of a vehicle to still have affixed, old number plates on his/her vehicle as the deadline for the use of old plates is September 30, 2013.

“Owners of vehicles are enjoined not to wait till the last minute, when there could be a rush, before procuring the new plates. Those whose vehicle papers have expired or are about expiring are urged to procure the new plates rather than just renewing the vehicle papers, which of course will have to be renewed again when the new plates are being obtained. This will definitely save costs.
“The corps is also working out some incentives to encourage early replacement of the old plates and these shall be made public in due course.”

When the new plates were introduced last year, the Corps Marshal and Chief Executive Officer, FRSC, Mr. Osita Chidoka, had explained that it was to ensure the safety and security of Nigerians.
At a hearing on the matter organised by the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-governmental Affairs in March 2012, Chidoka said the new plates were intended to tie a number plate to an individual or organisation.

  3. When I got the old number plate, I paid for it. So if FRSC want to change it, it should be at their cost. I should not be made to pay for a number plate twice.
When SOLUDU changed old currency, Nigerian were not made to pay for exchanging their old currency notes. why are people in authority exploiting the ordinary masses!. So far the implementation of the new number plates leaves much to be desired. there is no different from the way the previuos one was done, just to milk Nigerians dry. Security my foot!

  4. I feel its uncalled for,for real 90% of Nigerians are managing,so why the stress,if compulsory, then Government should give to registered vehicles free of any charge.

  5. This road safety group is a just a complete joke. Lets be very realistic here, how does this mandate actually help to provide security and safety of the Nigerians?

Lets talk about the security aspect. We heard that the new plates would have chips which should tag a car with an individual, so that stolen cars and cars used for robberies can easily be tracked. For this to conveniently work, we need consistent power supply and uninterrupted Internet services. Can the FRSC comfortably boast of these because the parent, Nigeria can't. I have been to a couple of road safety offices, they never have power supply like most of Nigeria, relying on generators. Then again, don't you think we have too many security outfits in Nigeria? Now road safety wants to tag along. Soon they would be asking for guns so that they can further harass Nigerians.

Safety? Yea right! People that lurk at hidden corners of bad roads so as to easily catch preys for their benefits, are these the ones that offer safety? One would expect that the corps would besiege the government to hastily repair bad roads or be empowered to monitor maintenance on cars and subsequently remove unworthy cars from the road. this is what VIO assumes to be doing. The bulk of the accidents in Nigeria are caused by bad roads, faulty cars and recklessness of certain drivers. These should be the focus of the corps and not being a commercial outfit for making money.

The truth is this new number plate scheme will not bring about any safety or security but unnecessary hardship for the regular Nigerian. Then we heard it was N6,500 per plate, now we are hearing 10,000 and 12,500. 12,500 x how many millions of nigerians? Honestly this is not the appropriate time to pursue such an agenda especially now that people are struggling with fuel scarcity.

  6. Let our reps sit on this matter.
Tell FRSC to leave us alone.
Incoming cars can be made to purchase the new number plate.
With time the old ones will fade away.
Thank you all as you delibrate on this.

  7. My fellow Nigerians, when will this senseless pronouncement by any government agency end. Nigerians should be given d opportunity to determine how things are done in this country. This is democracy. We should be allowed to vote for or against change of number plates like it is done in other countries. If Government want to change old number plates what is the rational for asking Nigerians to pay? They should rather exchange the old ones with new one with proper documentation. Why ask Nigerians to pay dat much? We must rise against Road Safety and their unpopular policies. Nigerians say no to exploitation, injustice and corruption!

  8. Don't worry guys. FRSC will surely lose out in this fight. A roguish organization supported by the Presidency because they internally fleece money from the Nigerian public. But the issue is that majority of Nigerians are improvised yet they want to tax them money from existence. There is no way the FRSC can win, no way guys. Just keep your cool and see what happens October 01, 2013. The much talked about revolution is about to begin.

  9. I don't see the difference between the old number plates an the so called new ones. These people at the helm of affairs in Nigeria never initiate what will benefit Nigerian Masses, but only what will make them fill their pockets and their bank accounts.
