Alleged flogging of PHCN staff by the Governor: Sokoto Gov calls NLC President rude

The stand-off between the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and Governor Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State, has degenerated with the governor describing NLC’s President Omar’s call for apology as not only mis-guided but “absolutely disgusting”

Wamakko was said to have flogged the Business Manager of PHCN in Wamakko Local Government Area of the state along with two of his officials last week, leading to a one-week strike by PHCN workers in Sokoto State, which paralysed government and commercial activities, leading to altercations between the state government and labour.#

The situation was temporarily resolved following the intervention of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III and other prominent natives of the area.

However, the matter was said to have escalated following insistence by NLC President, Mr. Abdulwaheed Omar that labour would embark on indefinite strike in Sokoto State if Governor Wamakko failed to tender public apology for allegedly assaulting the three PHCN workers.
In a swift reaction, Governor Wamakko described Omar’s statement as not only mis-guided but “absolutely disgusting” and “lies.”

A statement by Wamakko’s Special Assistant on Media, Sani Umar, yesterday, read in part: “Our attention has been drawn to an unnecessary outbursts and irresponsible statement credited to the president of the NLC.

“It is unfortunate that someone holding the position of Nigeria’s number one labour leader could descend so slow as to use gutter language on the person of a governor duly elected by millions of Sokoto people.

“Sokoto people could not have made a mistake by electing Governor Wamakko on three occasions. The governor is of impeccable character and a distinguished gentleman. It is, therefore, very uncharitable for the NLC president to suggest otherwise.

“It is absolutely disgusting that a person entrusted with the leadership of Nigerian workers could decide to throw caution to the winds and be calling an elected governor names. It really shows how indecent and uncouth he is.

“Perhaps he is being deluded by an imaginary power that is illusionary. How can someone claiming of being reliably informed about something take a hasty decision and still be fit enough to lead Nigerian workers?”

  1. If Wamakko has not flogged d PHCN officials there wouldn't hv been any strike. But I think d Gov. actually flogged these men and deserve to tender apology for mis-using his office by descending so low to be involved in electricity problem. NLC President has spoken well, Gov. Wamakko shld aplologise.

  2. I think , i think , what is the meaning of all this .

Cant we really have reliable information in this country.

Flogging issue is not an abstract thing that you cannot confirm from the people involved .

    Same on Nigeria Media.

Cant you people get fact before posting nonsense.

  3. This is quite erroneous for a Governor to descend so low as to flog an employee of a federal government parastatal. He should own up to his excesses. The people of sokoto didn't vote for him to flog people, but to show strong leadership character that can and should stir the good people of sokoto forward.

  6. If this governor is really what his S.A on Media is pretending, how can he flog workers? Now, between being a governor and descending as low as flogging people and asking that so called governor to appologize, which one is the worst? He can be elected for more than ten time; that does not give him the right to take his subjects for his objects.

  8. Well, the issue is not the flogging itself but Why he was flogged. The media has done a good job telling us a manager of PHCN was flogged but did almost nothing in telling us why he was flogged; a condition that aided the populace in taking sides with the manager against the governor. If the truth were told, the PHCN manager may never return to his office. Again, notice that the statement credited to Wamakko was partly read. What is said in that part that is hidden? Why not report all that has been said so that Nigerians can decide who is right and who is wrong? Neutral media reportage is one that has eluded the Nigerian polity. Its so frustrating that you hadly can trust any media house in Nigeria, not the government owned nor the privately managed, not the local media houses nor their foriegn counterpart. They all prepare thier scripts in consonance with the wills and aspirations of their sponsores, pursuing hidden agendas in their reportage, always guiding the populace to think for or against an idea.

  10. I dont blame the spokesman of Gov Wamakko for thinking that an elected governor is a DemiGod that can do and undo.He is a product of the dark age who is only there to earn his daily bread. Infact the NLC president is too slow for my liking in taking a decisive decision on the high handedness of Wamakko. If pride wont allow him to simply apologize, then let the State be brought to a stand still for as long as he remains adamant. This will serve as detterent to other Governors who lack respect for the masses that they are supposed to serve.

  16. NOT APOLOGY, BUT JUSTICE

Who will step into the shoes of the likes of Late Gani fawehinmi?. Femi Falana, Olisa Agbakoba etc where are you? Where are the constitutional and human right lawyers in this country?. This governor is power-drunk, he should be legally dealt with. Apology is not the issue here. Let those that were flogged obtain justice. The lawyers should tear his robe of immunity and bring him to open shame and disgrace.
