5 men arraigned for assaulting a nurse

The Police on Wednesday arraigned five men before an Abuja Magistrates’ Court on a three-count charge of joint act, assault and disturbance.

Police prosecutor Luka Ephriam gave the names of the accused as Ekeh Henry, Agbalusia Obi, Eneoli Nnachetani, Ifeanyi Odumegwu and Michael Ogedemgbe.

Ephriam told the court that the plaintiff, Toyin Akeshinro reported the case of joint act, assault and disturbance against the accused at the Kubwa Police Station on Sept. 3.

Ephriam said that the accused allegedly committed the offences at the Kubwa General Hospital premises on Sept. 3 when they took a lady, whom they claimed was an accident victim for emergency medical attention.

He said that the nurses at the Hospital asked the accused to obtain a patient’s card and fulfill other necessary conditions before they would be attended to.

“They insisted that the patient should be treated immediately and started to make so much noise, preventing the nurses from discharging their functions and disturbing other patients.
“In the process, they forcefully locked the plaintiff inside the nurses’ station, injuring her in the process.

“The plaintiff then called her husband, who, in turn, called the Police and reported the matter,’’ Luka said.
He said the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 79, 264 and 114 of the Penal Code.
Mr Onuoha Emmanuel, the Defence Counsel, applied for bail for the five accused, who pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Presiding Magistrate Ibrahim Mohammed granted each accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with a surety each in like sum.

He adjourned the case to Oct. 17 for further hearing.

  1. The Truth is that most nurses in Nigeria are unethical in the discharge of their duties. You need to pay a visit to some of our public hospitals or clinic to apprieciate the problem. Most do not cre about saving live. They are non challant, rude, arrogant and unprofessional. However, I dont condown lawlessness in any form but the appropriate medical body should also find a way of bringing their members to bookif found wanting in the discharge of their duties.

  2. Nurses are the worst medical personnels in our hospitals. There seems to be no one to report them to. This does not suggest we should use lawlessness to solve problems

  3. If you experience the non-challant attitude of medical personnel in pulic hospital, then you will understand why the ppl in question were rude to the nurse. Infact you will want to gun them down.If there is an emergency, let the medical team attend to the victim while others go and queue for the Card. Afterall, card is only used for keeping record and not for treating ailment.

  4. The nurses have their own blame but you need to know how much they have to handle in terms deliverable. they do the dirtiest of all the job and yet are treated the worse of all in the medical field. how many times do you hear the nurses go on strike? what do you say about the doctors? they get a better pay, much more than other medical staff and yet they transfer most of their actual duties to the next available nurse at the slightest opportunity and will just go on strike at any given opportunity, abandoning their major call for the nurses to handle while they still collect their full salary. you will all agree with me that the more the load of work, the more tensed up one will be and that usually explain some of their hostile behaviour at times. the same thing a banker will do to you when their are so many customers to attend to is simply the same you get when their is just one nurse to about 15 patients and more. It is really about a systemic failure which requires adequate attention.
