Lagos Driver Sent To Prison For Blocking Fashola’s Convoy

A truck driver, David Abiodun, 31, has been remanded in prison custody for allegedly obstructing the motorcade of Governor Babatunde Fashola on the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

He was arraigned Wednesday before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, on a five-count charge of dangerous and reckless driving without regard to other road users and causing obstruction to the Lagos State governor’s convoy.

The police stated in the charge sheet that the accused was arrested when he used his Mack truck with registration number XY 33 GGE to block the entire lane on the Lekki-Epe Expressway for unjustifiable reasons and in the process prevented the Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola and his convoy from having easy passage to their destination.

During interogation, it was alleged that Abiodun could not give satisfactory reasons on why he blocked the road.

He could not also produce his driver’s licence and the vehicle’s particulars on demand.

The offences, the police prosecutor, Inspector Clifford Ogu said, contravened Sections 28(i), 39(3) of the Traffic Act 548, 36 (P), 44 (1) Cap. 172, Vol. 7 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State of Nigeria and Section 126 (1) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and the presiding magistrate, Mrs. Famobiwo, granted him bail in the sum of N20,000 with two sureties in like sum who must produce evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government and they must also be resident in the state.

She adjourned the matter till 6 June, 2012 for mention.

The defendant was moved to Ikoyi Prison when he could not perfect his bail conditions.

  1. Haba!
he entered prison as a minor offender and you guys want to turn him into a terrorist by keeping him with other terrorists.
Unless he committed other offences, what is the sense in detaining him, if he could not give satisfactory answers then maybe he was nervous.
People obstruct the road every day and they are not charged to court but because The "doctor sacker" was involved, then the person should go to jail. That is bad.

  2. This incident has been reported in a way that offends the reader.
Did the driver obstruct the road?did he have a reason to obstruct the road?did he have a drivers license?were the papers of the truck valid?
If all the above were to be in place would he have been charged ? Probably note. Let us be responsible with our reporting.

  4. Let's forget that he obstructed the governors convoy. If he truly obstructed the road for no good cause, he should answer to it. A lot of these truck drivers are in the habit of driving in a manner that prevents other vehicles from overtaking them.

  5. With all these requirements or documents not in place, also blocking the road unnecessarily, the driver is wrong. But VIPs,on the other hand are culprits too.How many time GEJ's wife blocked roads on her visits to some states of the federation? All Nigerians including Govt VIPs & other VIPs are violating laws. There's no regard for laws in Nigeria.May God help us!

  8. well, what the t-driver did was wrong, he committed two offences, (1)blocking governor's convoy for no reason, (2) for not having driver's license and other particulars, but officer have mercy for him ok because i know when the GEJ's wife came to Lagos, because of her coming every where was blocked and no body neither Gov. Fashola sue her to court or take any legal action on her that time, but i know that Nigeria law says, no body is above the law, for this reason this T-driver should be released, he did not kill any body please but let it be a lesson to others. thank you.

  10. re-introduce Theory and Pratical Driving test before you get your Driver's License, then 85% of the wahala is sorted, most of this drivers have do not know what an Highway code booklet looks like, how many of them know what a zebra crossing means, go back to the 1980's

  11. Please do not send him to prison for on no just cause.
Remember he is part of the people that voted you in.
We should not do what former Imo State Governor did to a Rev. Father that landed him to where he is today.
