Minister tasks ICT experts, others on vision 20:2020

SCIENCE and Technology Minister Prof. Ita Ewa has said that without the positive contributions of various stakeholders, especially from the Information and Communications Technology sector, achieving the goals of Vision 20: 2020 may remain a tall order.

According to him, the inputs of stakeholders remain the vista that will further drive the implementation of various programmes and documentations of the Federal Government in meeting the target of making Nigeria one of the 20 leading economies in the next nine years.

The minister spoke in Lagos yesterday while declaring open the third phase of the ownership sectoral workshop on the Nigeria ICT4D Plan, organized by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

Ewa who was represented at the workshop by the Director General of the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIRRO), Dr. Mrs. Gloria Elemo, stressed that Nigeria’s economic breakthrough relies majorly on intellectual contributions from stakeholders in the various sectors of the economy.

According to him, it is only through proper co-ordination and collaboration of stakeholders that Nigeria can be a major player in the global information society and knowledge economy, “therefore our gathering today is of paramount importance towards the evaluation of various ongoing initiatives aimed at achieving part of the outcome of the two-phased World Summit on Information Society (WSIS), the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and sustainable national development in Nigeria, as encapsulated in the National Vision 20:2020 and Mr. President’s Transformation Agenda.”

The minister submitted that the Nigerian Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) Plan, which, according to him, has been adjudged the best in sub-Saharan Africa, was developed to serve as a road map on how National Information Technology System will be upgraded and used in addressing several national development issues.

“The national Strategic Plan of Action, which covers various critical sectors, was designed to contribute to the realization of the socio-economic development policy priorities of government through the identification of specific short-term, medium-term and long-term programmes and projects for implementation by identified stakeholders”, he stated.

In his welcome address, the DG of NITDA, Prof. Cleopas Angaye said as the country strived to become a global player, there was need for stakeholders to work in line with the objectives of the government.
According to him, “there is need for total commitment to developing the information technology sector, because of its critical nature to our national economy as we march on in the current era of transformation. We should take cognizance of the fact that we all have important roles to play. We are aware that specific roles are clearly set out for stakeholders in implementing the Nigeria ICT4D plan, I therefore enjoin all of us to put in our little quota in using IT as a major tool of achieving the national vision of making our dear country, Nigeria, a major player in the global economy within the next nine years.”
