Nigerians to get Identification Numbers soon- NIMC

TO ensure Nigerians have proper identification means, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) is planning to begin issuance of a unique 11-digit national identification number to Nigerians in August.

The Director-General of the commission, Chris Onyemenam, who disclosed this yesterday in Lagos at a strategic roundtable meeting with financial institutions and electronic payment service providers, said the move is in line with the agency’s mission to establish and regulate a reliable and sustainable national identity management system and infrastructure that will enable a citizen or legal resident assert his identity.

He explained that Nigerians would obtain the numbers through the Short Messaging Service (SMS) and electronic mail.  According to him, the first national identity card will be issued on September 30 as part of the commemoration of Nigeria’s independence.

In his projection, after the first 30 months of live data capture, 100 million Nigerians are expected to be in the data-base. “The infrastructure is in place. Right now, in fixed locations, we are doing the pilot scheme. I can tell you some are capturing an average of 1, 000 Nigerians daily and we are still in the developmental stage,” the DG said.
